Buying a Mac is like buying a car off the lot and never having the ability to MOD it. This will never work for me.

Right on Zippy. Macs are good for ProTools and Final Cut Pro and that's about all.

Macs are kewl if you want a pretty office with flowers. PCs are where the real work is done.

grey ghost,

my son is composing and writing on Finale, and we're about to put up a home machine and get a midi interface, and ultimately he'll need protools. [btw, i used to work at Line6 who wrote protools and licensed it to digidesign].

we planned to go with a pc since it's better for finale [his composing teacher says] and his games. should i rethink this assuming in 3 years or so he'll be using protools? [he's 10]

thanks watt

Just imagine what a PC could get you!

Anyways, I thought it was your skill behind the lens that netted you those lovelies?

I was an ardent PC user, but the Mac interface is alot easier and there are less headaches. I think its because Mac uses their own software on all their machines and PCs use either 3rd party software for their machines. Mac has the advantage there.

In terms of looks, its a toss up. I personally think macs are the best looking machines out there, some people do not. I would have to say Mac has the advantage in "coolness" where IBM has the advantage in Classic Business orientated computers.

In terms of support, Mac is pretty good. In a recent Mobile PC magazine article i read, they gave Gateway the highest rating since they solved 3 out of 3 problems in under 30 minutes, but Apple an A- since it solved 3 out of 3 problems in 40 minutes. Mac has good support but you have to pay $350 for it. In addition, Mac has the best online support ever. Like 200 linked pages of diagnoses and stuff.

Mac software is not as diverse as windows, but when you need to have real time processing, nothing beats a mac. I use my Powerbook G4 for music editing (watt i have a full studio here) ProTools (with the G5) Reason with my powerbook and Finale with the G5. Nothing has beaten the mac.

Mac vs. PC people. This will never die. Its a red sox yankee thing. People prefer the yanks, people prefer the sox. I am a Mac person. I love the interface, the ease of downloading and saving stuff. I love the design. I love the sub culture. I love the fact that I have had 0 error messages since January, and my PC which ive had for 1.8 years now, that I took immaculate care of (most organized, virus protected, hard disk clean up every other day) is breaking down slowly.

Its sad.

I love Macs

One area not mentioned about Macs to often currently is the ability to take open source software ( look at Sourceforge for instance ) which is BSD based often times can be re-compiled for the Mac. You've got to have some skills to do this, but it opens a whole other world. Since Macs moved to a Unix core, Macs now have very good bones.
