Call any Board of Equalization office to see... I think it is still doable...
DMV lady hated and reluctantly only collected $1200 (plate fee)
from me...mumbling "it's just not right"....HA!

You know what's not right.... The DMV collects sales tax on used cars, each and every time it's sold. They should only collect it once on the new car sale.... So THAT is not right....

I know exactly how it is, the lady that registered mine was stunned at the dollar amount, and said, that's a down payment on a house....

I said, yeah, but I alrady have one of those...LOL

You can drive ..just save gas reciepts. The truck that was bringing my
car back broke down just near Primm Nev. due to trip I was taking in
2 days I had to fly to Vegas and drive it from there (not so bad!!!)

Only details...buy it out of state, use it out of state, and prove it did not ener Calif until 91 days aftyer purchase. You need to document all of the aforementioned...as simple as that.

I've done it twice now.

Hm... Pardon my ignorance but how do i document that the car was held out of state for 90 days?

And when i call the BOE do i just ask if the 90 day tax free loophole is still in effect? Thanks man.

can we then ask a friend over on that state we bought the car to save the gas receipt that he fills on his car, and use that?

and does the car has to be in the state we purchase the car from? or we can show proof from any state except CA?

Too late for you. Car is in the state and DMV smog will show in Sacramento.
Sorry you should have read this thread earlier.

any state. for instance I bought in Houston
drove it to florida and there it sat for 5 months while work was being done.

again very simple..buy it out of state, use it out of state, and do not bring
it in until day 91 from purchase.Fill out BOE form 106 they give you exemption
certificate, you take that to DMV,pay plate fees. NO SALES TAX,NO USE TAX,

End of happy face story.

well simply put.

but 3 months is a long time to wait for a newly acquired car to be left out of state, unless you out of state with the car too.

But to save some, I guess have to be patience...

In my particular case Heffner was doing the twin turbo work
so it would have been there anyhow.I saved $16,000 (more 25%
of what Heffner charged me).

So it depends on how much you are saving Vs. how quickly you need
to have the car?

Sorry again for the ignorance, but how do they (The DMV) know when you purchased the car?

DMV is not the major problem BOE is. DMV did request Purchase receipt
as this was a new car on an MSO.BOE will require you to PROVE all
conditions I mentioned.

You really can't trick these guys unless you out and try to manufacture documents etc. That IMHO wouldn't be worth it.

So do you fill out the BOE 106 form when you purchase the car? What if the car is used...?

Why not use the Calif DMV form 262 (vessel transfer/mileage/power of atty) and have out of state seller sign that? That would confirm date of sale on a used car.
