The Lamborghini Super Trofeo Cup saw a massive accident last saturday in Brno (Czech Republic) during Round 4 of the season. The number 22 Gallardo LP560-4 driven by Giorgio Bartocci got off into the gravel on the last turn before the front straight. It's unclear whether Bartocci was nudged by another racer or whether a mechanical failure caused the slide, but either way, the car hit the wall at considerable speed and nearly disintegrated on impact.
The driver's side door sprung open as the car slid down the tarmac, and Bartocci could be seen flailing outside the vehicle. When it finally came to a stop, the Raging Bull turned into a raging fireball. Fire crews initially took longer than expected to pull the driver from the wreckage and were seen using underpowered fire extinguishers to battle the blaze. The FIA is expected to investigate the incident. Amazingly, Bartocci survived the ordeal. It is reported that an Aston Martin Racing technician pulled him out of the burning Gallardo. He is currently in intensive care.
(Hospital Update Tue May 25th: The driver is reportedly awake and off a respirator with broken ribs, a broken leg and second-degree burns over 40% of his body)

The driver is very fortunate. That wreck looked horrible and I was worried about third-degree burns. Driver's suit did its job and he got out in time - broken bones and second-degree burns are very painful but it will all completely heal.

Do you notice that the only two guys who keep risking the heat to pull the driver out of the car are the only ones NOT wearing fire suits. What's with that!? Hello! Fire suits should have handed the fire extinguishers to the street clothes folks and pulled out the driver.
Makes you wonder, what kind of help would you have if you had that bad of a crash anywhere on the track on a HPDE day? This driver was very fortunate it happened right on the front straight where there were plenty of resources due to it being a full-fledged sanctioned race (even though it still takes a minute to get the driver out!) And I'm assuming that was a racecar with a full slew of safety gear on it - on board fire suppression, fuel cell, etc...
Maybe fireproof underwear and full driver's suit coverage is not too bad an idea? Hmmmm. I've never seen that many fire extinguishers or guys in fire suits at any HPDE day I've attended. And even if all the drivers stopped to help, 2.5 or 5lb units wouldn't do a thing against a fire like that.
