1992 500sl
My dad likes having a sports car to play around with for the spring/summer (in addition to his daily driver) and a friend in the states is going to be selling his 1992 500SL Benz. So my dad is seriously considering purchasing it for $12,000. It is high mileage though (maybe not for the year but in general), about 130k miles if I remember correctly? I will have to ask him but in the 100's.
-Is this a relatively reliable car? Any specific issues to look out for?
-Does anyone know more about importing a car into Canada that is over 15 years old? I'll have to look into it but I believe it is less stringent, because on riv.ca it says that 15yr+ cars are exempt from the riv requirements.
-Does this car need a MB mechanic? My dad goes to a Volvo independant place that he really likes for his daily, they should be equipped to handle it right?
Thanks.

err, u sure ur dad wants a 16 yo car with high mileage? you may want to research mbworld.org. sl500 isn't a fast or fun car anymore. unless ur dad wants a 2 seater, you can get a similar mileage E320 or E430 for about same price but much newer model (1998-2001).

djantlive- He is looking for a sporty coupe of some sort, so getting an E-class would be redundant to his Volvo sedan. But as far as other sports cars around that price point (+/- $5k) do you have any suggestions? Maybe a used vette?
Shake- I think it is good condition, I don't have all the details, it's a Cali car so no rust or anything. And it's not so much that he is into old cars as it is that he doesn't want to spend a lot on a car that he will be only using on the weekends for 6 months of the year. The result is looking at older cars.

i had a sl500 from 94 or 95 a long time ago. they are ok cars, but they aren't fun, they aren't really fast, they aren't all that well made, they aren't really all that great. nothing huge broke but everything small did, and everything small in those cars is expensive. don't get it, look at something else.
