SL owners please weigh in....

I've seen some 2003+ SL500 models selling for well under 30k and I've always wanted to own one so I'm seriously thinking about it. My main questions concern the durability of the chasis, especially on higher mileage cars. I've owned high mileage convertibles before and I've noticed that after 100k+ miles the chasis has so much shake, rattle, and wind noise. I know the SL is a higher caliber of car but I'm wondering if people have noticed these issues as the mileage piles on.

Also how reliable is the car in general? My main concerns would be to fix the roof should it ever stop working. General maintenance stuff like oil and fluid changes aren't too much of a concern.

Lastly what about depreciation? I never buy a car as an investment but I've been spoiled by past BMWs which have all held up very well from a depreciation stand point when compared to other cars.

Any other general tips for a prospective buyer?

Thanks

rmani,

I would suggest against a higher mileage SL. I've had two and there are just a number of expensive systems (electronic and mechanical) that can go bad at any time and are extremely expensive to fix out of warranty. The price on these cars may have dropped, but the cost to maintain has not.

how expensive are you talking about? I remember when I had my 7 series anytime something would break it was at least a grand to fix, so in that regard i'm not too scared of large repair bills. Now if you're talking about major stuff that's gonna cost 5k to fix that's another story though

youre talking about buying it at $30k or under, at that point why are you worried about depreciation?

I doubt that car will ever be less than $20-25k, so if you can get one at 30k or less, than you're pretty safe from much depreciation.

I've had 2 03's, and 04, and an 05, and...

I probably wouldn't own an 03. Maybe an 04, which is not much different, but the 05 has been a markedly better car in every way (build quality, fit/paintwork, quality feel, better raw materials), and of course, you have the new audio/nav system along with bluetooth. Yes, the prices on 05's are higher. They can get close to 50 for right mile cars with sport and excellent options. That being said, I'm not sure I want to own any of them our of warranty. There are lots of proprietary items which only your MB dealer will be able to diagnose and repair. I'd want to buy something with some kind of warranty, even if it's only the most basic coverage. I still enjoy mine, and have kept the 05 longer that just about any car I've had in the last few years. I do want to sell it, but only to move on to a 55. Hope this helps.
