What to Get SL55 or M3

Well said!

What are the reliability differences between the SL55, the SL65, and the SL600. I know MB reliability has been a little shaky in the past few years. I would assume the two AMG models would be more reliable than the standard MB, right?

If you get one with a warranty, I don't think this will be an issue. I know the E55's had a bunch of recalls but not sure about the SL55.
Saying this is not really in my best interest, but it takes a lot more mods to make the power of what a SL600 or SL65 makes once we load our software into that bi turbo engine. I actually don't think even with all the mods available for the SL55, that it can reach the power levels of a chipped SL65 or SL600. And there are intercooler pump upgrades and air box upgrades for the 65/600's for a little bit more added power. I few people here and there get the squeaky belt/supercharger issue and they run into heat issues sometimes.

i'm confused about this thread mainly because of the price differences between the two. i've been debating on an sl500 because i just love the lines and they can be had for under 25k now with the sport package. that pricing is right in line with most e46 m3s. i'd love an sl55, as i drove my friend's one many years ago and the power was just amazing, BUT they are at least 30-35k for a decent one so it doesn't seem like a good comparison to me.
i've heard the mercedes SLs are terrible for electrical stuff though so i'm a bit scared off, plus finding the right car and the right price has been difficult. o an to answer your original question i'd get the sl55

From personal experience, I had a 2002 C4S which I loved, bought it with 32,xxx miles in 2006 and sold it with 96,xxx in 2008. drove that car everywhere, plus my roommate is a Porsche mechanic so i was able to fix the car whenever I wanted and saved so much on labor. I do miss shifting tho. I sold it late last year and was debating practically the same issue but the E55 ended up being in my price range. 2005 E55 with sticker price of 96K ended up selling with 41,xxx miles for 34grand. IMO, AWESOME pickup...pun intended! so there are deals to be had...
Drive a 55 before you decide, but the car has INSANE power in stock form, and you HAVE to get a warranty...goodluck!
