55 all the way.
-55 has a supercharger and boy is it sweet. Love the way it pulls. The 63 is 0.1 seconds slower than the 55 but thats not the only plus.
IMO the 63's crossfire lights and other add-ons dont do it for me. Its lost all the elegance and classic proportions. Again to each his own but in terms of looks 55>63.
Also performance 55>63
Though the 63 has some pros too. Since its a new car so there will be less electronic problems and you can get one with warranty.
But now lets get to the best part- price. You can pick one up for half the price of a new 63 and a 65 for less than a 63.

That was my say. But everyone have their own views. Verdict - 55.

Great info... I assume "upgrades" like the ECM/ECU can be done on the 55 via the likes of Renntech and such that could really make the car a whole different animal ?!?

Oh yes definately. Don't forget the mod potential. Though the stock 55 is quite a brutal animal itself to say the least.

I'd take an 06 SL55, get the SL65 front bumper installed on it with a nice boot lid rear spoiler. My ideal SL would be a 55 with the performance package wheels painted anthratice ala 65 style and the front 65 bumper installed.

same here the new sl63 is so boxy up front compared to the rear that it just doesnt flow for me

I would go with sl55 one right before the face lift

Depends on what you're looking for. The 63 is a meaner car. The sound, the looks and the drive. However if the price is right on a used one then a 55 isn't too bad. I'd stay away from the 03-04s.

SL55 or SL65 all the way if you like to mod your cars that is, you will see more bang for the buck power especially with out kleemann deals going on now its too hard to pass up the power increases each time you add a mod.

I'd go with the SL63. I had an SL55 which was a great car but the improved transmission and almost negligible performance difference and newer body style would sway me over to the 63.
