CLS 55 or CLS 63? hard decision
I'm about to pull the trigger on getting a CLS.. pretty excited about it but I am having trouble choosing between the 55 and 63.
I'm thinking the 55 might be the best choice because with a few easy mods, it will kill mostly anything on the freeway.
63 has an incredible exhaust note and somehow I'm drawn to it.
What do you guys think?

CLS 55 vs 63
The lease expired on my CLS 55, I wanted to buy it but MB financial would not negotiate low enough, so I bought a Diamond white CLS 63 & love the car. The exhaust note & 7 spd trans is amazing, tighter steeing & overall love the 09 CLS 63, however the tourque on the 55 was great.

Hey guys I'm new to the forum....and I'll be in the same dilemma in the near future on which one to pick. After doing some research I found this post from another forum which might help make a decision (I think i'll be going with the cls55 because of the pinned to your seat feeling, and its cheaper):
Mercedes Enthusiast Magazine did an amazing comparison of both AMG V8 powerplants inside a Merc CLS. They ran a CLS63 against a CLS55 and came up with up with some numbers and good quotes. I thought every AMG freak that doesn't get this magazine would like to know the results and what they had to say (I can only say that I wish I was there for the test ).
Here are some numbers they came up with:
0-mph - CLS63 (secs) - CLS55 (secs)
0-10 --- 0.7 -------------- 0.8
0-20 --- 1.4 -------------- 1.5
0-30 --- 2.0 -------------- 2.2
0-40 --- 2.8 -------------- 2.8
0-50 --- 3.7 -------------- 3.6
0-60 --- 4.6 -------------- 4.7
0-70 --- 5.9 -------------- 5.9
0-80 --- 7.3 -------------- 7.1
0-90 --- 8.7 -------------- 8.7
0-100 - 10.6 ------------- 10.5
0-110 - 12.6 ------------- 12.4
0-120 - 14.9 ------------- 14.7
0-130 - 17.4 ------------- 17.5
0-140 - 21.0 ------------- 21.4
0-150 - 25.2 ------------- 25.5
v-max - 155.9 ----------- 156.6
Here are some things they had to say about the cars:
- The 63 puts its power down more effectively but the 55 is much more spectacular.
- The 63 has seven ratios to the 55's five, but from standstill through every increment up to 140 mph they're never more than 0.2 seconds apart.
- It may be more refined but the CLS63 is still blindingly fast.
- The 63's throttle response might be crispier, but after the slight pause in the 55 you're pinned to your seat with real brutality.

A used 55 with around 12-15k miles is about 50k. A used 63 with the same low miles is around 58-60k
8-10 thousand difference. Its not really about the price, Im trying to decide how fast I want to go and if I want a newer car

i was reading about owners with modified CLS AMG's and it seemed like the 63 owners like to use nitrous when on the strip and many 55 owners go with RENNTECH setup. After looking at some 1/4 mile times The 63's with a 100-150 shot and the 55's with stage 5 RENNTECH upgrade's run the 1/4 in pretty much the same time with almost identical trap speeds.
The only difference I could see which would slow one of these cars down while on the street was that the 55 had drag tires when the 63 was running stocks.
I think a good nitrous shot ( in the 63) while up against a formidable opponent would bring you up to the level of a boosted Stage 5 CLS 55. PLUS nitrous is a cheap mod

there is more modding potential for the 55 as it is forced induction...but personally id go with the 63...its newer overall and naturally aspirated so u get better reliability...and plus 507 stock HP is A LOT...id go with the newer engine...
