I thought the speedshift was basically a duel clutch. I have an 09 SL63 and it sure shifts like one. I drove the new Jag XK-R with the duel clutch and the Merc shifts just as fast, does the rev ups on downshifting and all that.

I thought the same thing, but I was reading something the other day and it is my understanding that this is a single clutch setup.

The XKR uses a 6 speed ZF auto that is programmed to lock up in gears which give it quick shifts and a more direct drive than traditional autos. But the AMG Speedshift MCT transmission is the 7G-tronic auto with a wet clutch in exchange for the torque converter. Which makes it shift quicker and does not allow the traditional slippage a torque converter does. It also allows them to incorporate race start launch control. And makes the rev matching quicker and the shifts more positive resulting in 100 ms shift times which are not far away from dual clutch shift times.

Is the Mercedes setup similar to the automated manual in something like a Ferrari?

No its an automatic, the Ferrari F1 transmission is a manual....so they're the same as night and day are.

Just to clarify. The sls is the first with dual clutch. The only one with the wet clutch set up is the sl63. All the other 63's are normal amg 7speeds. Although the c63 is the only one of them that does the rev matching like the sl63 or sls. The v12's are still all 5 speeds since the 7speed cant reliabily handle 700ftlbs of torque.

I think they should lower the number but then again, the 63 is actually a 6.2 liter. I could see how going back to 55 would not sit well with 63 owners and new 55 buyers.

The 2010 E63 gets the MCT Speedshift transmission and for 2011 the S63 and CL63 does as well. The C63 will be the only car it looks like at this point not getting the MCT Speedshift.

But in another exciting development, the ZF 8 speed will have a 752 lb ft torque limit and a optional wet clutch. So hopefully the Speedshift MCT is upgrades to handle the 65 cars increased torque.

I read in the magazine that the Twin Turbo Engine would be modular for all V6 and V8 MB models incl. AMG with the same engine block.

What we know is the one they will put V8 5.5L TT in the S63:
563HP@5000rpm, 664lb-ft@2400-3000rpm in 18.9psi boost (S63 w/ perf package)
V8 5.5L 536HP@4400-5900rpm, 590lb-ft@2100-4600rpm in 14.5psi boost (S63 standard)

I'm guessing they also have a V8 4.6L TT version that might be used in:
C class AMG producing 460HP in around 12 psi
E Class AMG producing 530HP in around 20 psi (similar boost to BMW M5)
E/S/CLS/SL/ML 500 producing 400HP in around 8 psi (similar boost to BMW 550i / 750i)

And the V6 TT 3.5L version that might be used in the E/S/CLS/SL/ML 400, producing around 350HP in around 12psi

At last to replace AMG S/SL/CL 65 6.0L V12 engine:
610HP in around 23psi boost

Now the question is how they can reinforce the wet clutch in 7speed MCT to handle the 800lb-f torque of the 65 models.
I don't think they would use the old 5 speed with torque converter.

Also, the new 5.5TT engine would have a flat peak power in 4400-5900rpm, like in the S63 standard boost:
536HP@4400-5900rpm, 590lb-ft@2100-4600rpm in 14.5psi boost
It's kind like having a CVT transmission in the AMG car

I think I'd take the "old" 2010 S/E/SL 63 NA high revving engine 525HP @6800rpm. But the clean emission standard force Mercedes to go FI route.
