Question ML63 Winter wheel and tire setup

Does anyone have any recommendations for a winter wheel and tire setup for the ML63? I know the OE specs for the setup (19x9.5 wheels, 46mm offset with 285/45-19 M+S tires), however the choices for wheels and tires in these sizes are extremely limited; so much so that apparently there isn't even a factory or OEM option.

If anyone has found a setup in these specs and has recommendations, I would love to hear what you found and how you liked them; especially how it did in the snow and ice with the setup.

Thanks!

I've got an ML320 and run the stock 17's with Toyo Proxes, but that's not the setup in question. Try asking over on Benzworld.org - you'll likely get lots of opinions.

Sorry I could not offer any useful feedback.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, the 17s won't clear the big brakes on the ML63; frankly I'm amazed that there is a 19" setup that does because the 20" stock setup is about as tight as I've seen with the calipers. I did post on Benzworld and MBWorld but haven't gotten responses yet.

We can get you a pretty nice setup for the winter! With 19" you can pretty much choose the width, offsets and whatever you need.

I thought the ML63 had factory 20s? and option was the 21?

Try a set of Continental DWS. I plan on using them this winter on my X5 M, if Tire Rack ever gets the right size in stock!!!

Yes, it has factory 20's. In '07 the optional winter size is the 19's. I don't know if that changed at any point, but the size and offset and corresponding tire size is next to impossible to find in the 19" OE specs. I put the Conti DWS's on my wife's Infiniti M35X and really suspect that may be the way I end up having to go. They are a very impressive tire and supposedly great on snow, but we haven't found out yet since I just put them on this Spring. I still think a dedicated winter tire will out-perform the all-seasons though and really want to run a different, much less expensive set of wheels over the winter though because the salt and cinders just destroy the finish and the AMG stockers are incredibly expensive.

How do you like the X5M? That is quite a beast!

I bought an extra set of alloys from a shop that did a take off from another ML63 and did the Vredensteins when I had an ML63 a few years back - great set up.

Were you running the 20's or did you find a set of 19's, stef430? Do you recall what Vredestein model was? Just doing a quick search, I found a "Wintrac 4 Extreme" in that 19" size, but nothing in the 20" size.

Just had a word with our engineers about the wheels. They told me a 19" setup would clear the brake calipers without a problem on the ML63 AMG.

Thanks D2, I had been emailing with Derrick from there and a custom wheel solution is going to be way too expensive for a winter set that's just going to get beat up by all the salt, cinders, and potholes inevitable here in the northeast. They're very nice wheels and I'm just looking for a beater set of wheels with some good winter tires.

I used to have a ML55. It had a nice set of factory chromed AMG wheel and they were 18s only
I used a set of ML500 17inch wheel with Performance M&S. They cleared the rotors and caliper with no problem. Height was the same
and the truck was unstoppable.

I plan to use the DWS M&S for my X5 M. I really do not think you need a dedicated snow tire for the ML.
Most RWD BMWs and MBs recommend snow tires all the way around.
But with the all wheel drive you have, M&S would be more then enough.

trust me, my Ml55 never got stock or had an issue going anywhere in snow. I am hoping the X5 is the same

Yeah, I'm having no luck finding anything in the 19" OE winter spec size. I don't know why they would spec a wheel that they don't make and just about no-one else does, along with a tire size that is virtually non-existant in a winter tire. Right now it's about 99% certain I'll be going with the DWS in the same size as the stock 20's. Thanks for the feedback donho.

Thanks for all the replies and info. I ended up going with the Conti DWS all seasons in the stock size. We'll see how they do once the snow hits.
