Akra1,

Thanks again for your time in replying.

I've owned several Mercedes and a few Porsches through the years and I'm going back and forth on both forums. My wife is now driving a Mercedes and of course she would like to see me go in that direction----she can't drive stick shift.

I rode in a Porsche recently on 100 octaine R+M/2 (he has multiple programs for different fuels) and it has been dynoed at around 640 HP to the rear wheels. That was a pretty good ride. He has had it to the drag strip with the same ecu program and did something in the 10.90's. The tires were Nittos and didn't look like the drag radials I have seen. They are his regular street tires. The car was a GT 2 and is a couple hundred pounds or so lighter than the typical 996 twin turbo.

That is the kind of performance I would be looking for from a Mercedes without nitrous or special drag-strip-only tires. I would also be looking for reliabality and comfort as Mercedes delivers like few others in the world.

Am I just dreaming, or is something like that doable, and by what means? I'm not talking about buying a new 6.3 liter engine, building up the horsepower, and modifying it somehow to fit in an E? That would be cost prohibitive for me.

Al

I think it is possible to get pretty close to those performance numbers with an E55. IMO the 55k motor is a much better platform for mods than the new 6.3, so that's not really an option anyway. You will have traction problems though. With the kind of torque these cars are capable of making, and the rpm at which it peaks, it is near impossible to get good traction.

I think most of the stage 2 cars are running mid to high 11's. So if you were to get the stage 2 plus cams and throttle body, you can probably have a low 11 second car thats traps smewhere around 123-127. www.dragtimes.com is a great database that shows peoples timeslips, and lists the mods and conditions in which those times were achieved.

Thanks for the link, Akara1. I guess an E55 would look pretty stupid with flared fender wells and 345's on the rear, but it would give some traction and probably also allow one to break his cv joints and other sundry items.

Don't know if anyone has tried slicks. Being an auto without a high stall torque converter, I don't know how well it would do with slicks.

Akara1,

Not interested in having to change tires every time I want to launch quickly, and I completely agree with you that without a TC that would flash pretty high, there would be no good launch. The TC, of course would murder your fuel economy.

Are there any good MB tuners in or near the Atlanta GA area?

Jeremy,

That's an interesting inversion. I once flew from Atlanta to Oregon (just north of Eugene) to buy a motor coach. No transporter, though. Drove it myself.

Jeremy,

Am at odds with wife (Mercedes girl) and me (Porsche guy). One other slight problem in favor of the Mercedes camp.....she's one of these youngsters who never learned to drive a stick.

Sounds like you handle the "good stuff."

Bad, as in ***!

Lots of bucks and lots of weight. Would take monster amounts of HP and TQ (hot to mention, lots more bucks) to push it into the 10's which is where I want to be, in full street trim, without drag radials with which I have to be playing the game of swap, swap, swap
