OLD SCHOOL 500Sec Restoration, Lots of pics!
Hey guys, I ususally post a lot on the 997 forums, but I just finished my new project and wanted to share it with my 6speed friends!
I finally finished restoring my Euro grey market 500Sec that I have been working on for the past few months. The car is a 1984 500Sec that was imported here late 1984. The first thing done was getting the engine serviced by Mr MB motors in Tarzana who did a very good job replacing the timing chaing, rails, spark plugs, and installing a K&N filter. He also installed my H&R springs I got from tirerack.com and my Bilstein HD shocks I got from jonathan here on the forum.
Pics of the car right after engine work and drop.
After that the car went to the body shop and was sandblasted and sprayed with custom Porsche Cobalt Blue Metallic paint.
While the body was getting sprayed, the interior was getting done. The headliner and pillars and visors were covered in dark grey suede, and the seats were covered in light grey leather, with black quilted suede centers and blue stitching. A Kenwood KVT-911 monitor was also instaled as well as a hardwire for my iPod and Infinity Kappa speakers. I also had a remote keyless entry put in.

As soon as the car came back, I got it clear bra'd, re-tinted, slapped on some smoked corners and put in yellow fogs. I also mounted the 18x8.5" OZ Mito wheels.
I also got a custom exhaust put in. I went with a y-pipe 2.5" single into a Magnaflow muffler. The last thing I put in was the smoked tails. Here are the pics of the finished product!

Yea, The car was imported here from Germany late in 1984 when 500sec's did not exist in America yet, so instead they had to put a 560sec badge when it was completed for U.S licensing. I asked the body shop to debadge it but they didn't fill the holes so I just kept it on for its interesting history.

I love these old Mercs. I used to own an '83 AMG 500 SEC way back when.
Mercedes face-lifted the SEC in 1986 and they changed the ribbed panels on the side to a a flatter design. It looks better IMO so you might want to think about getting a set. You also might like to change that tugboat steering wheel to something smaller. But overall, A+ for going with something out of the norm and tastfully modding it.

Thanks, if I had a lot of money, i'd get a lot more things for this car including the things you mentioned, but I want to finish modding my 997 now

Congrats - you have one of the most classic old-school MBs out there. I've always loved them! In fact my father had a dark gray one back in the day when the concept of "pimping" hadn't reached our side of the pond.

Nice, those cars use to be the ****e back in the 80's, real pimpin rides.
What you should do next is get rid of them DOT headlights and get the Euro headlights, it will make the car look like it was supposed to.
AND, definately get rid of the 560 badging. Very nice resto job, HIGH FIVE !
