Basically instead of the phone grabbing whatever frequency is available (as most do) there is a setting that lets you select between two band choices. You can select either 850/1900 for North American use or 900/1800 for use in Europe and Asia.
So the phone is in fact quad-band, despite what confusion on the web may indicate. Here are some pics to illustrate what I'm talking about:

No, GSM is a technology used by Cingular and T-mobile, Verizon and Sprint use CDMA.
They make a phone called a VK-X100 that is simmilar for CDMA (Verizon) however I higly doubt you will be able to find one outside of Korea, or possibly Asia in general. The GSM version is rare, but GSM is a substantially more popular technology worldwide, making the CDMA phones scarce at best.
