Buy a new or used Mini?

Well I got the Mini bug and I wouldnt mind picking up a used one for a discount but it seems they dont take too much of a hit after a few years.

I priced the model I want on miniusa.com at 28k (Cooper S with sport/premium package), used ones are going for about 22-25k for ones that are 05 with 20k miles on it.

So should I just bite the bullet and buy new or am I just not looking in the right place for a used one?

MINI's have had the highest residule value of any car for some time. new vs. used may boil down to supercharger vs. turbocharger. see other thread for much more info.

My dad just went through the same thing. Ended up ordering a new one. Speced out the way he wanted it, full warranty, 0 miles and only a couple grand more than a used one.

The 05's are the older supercharged ones, the newer 07-08 are turbo charged.

Since a used Mini is 75-110% of a new one, just spec & order what you want! The wait is not bad, we had ours in 6 weeks. You get FREE maintaince for 4 years, & everything you want on the car & nothing you don't. Really newer used ones are way over priced!

used ones are expensive. drive both and decide which car you prefer. they are very different. if modding is a concern, the older R53 has more options. if warranty is a bigger concern, get the R56. aftermarket has yet to fully develop for these cars, but it will, eventually.

beaner makes sense
that's what we did - got a new one and love it
wasn't enough of a price difference for us to justify the used one.

thanks. those are three words not often used in the same sentence. i guess i can give more wisdom to others than i use myself. i now have about $65k in mine and i'm not done. i have managed to get the market value of my car down to under $20k. aren't track cars great! to further prove my insanity, i'm thinking of getting a p-car as weekend driver and make the MINI track-only. anyone know a good therapist?

I bought an 06 S because of all the aftermarket products available for it (Exhaust, pulleys, etc)... There is so much for the R53 vs the R56... I sat at the dealer and was close to ordering an 08 but a friend talked me out of it and I am glad he did...

So if you guys are looking for used ones.. here is a short list of some on NAM (Northamericanmotoring.com)... http://www.northamericanmotoring.com...play.php?f=149

06 Chili Red S - 17K miles - Premium, black int, Auto. $18,800 http://www.northamericanmotoring.com...cat.php/cat/46

Someone looking for a great track car... I wish I would of seen this one when I was looking...
http://www.northamericanmotoring.com...d.php?t=147689
06- CHili Red S - $20K - Fully modded out cranking 240HP!!!!!!!!!!

I've got an '02 Mini Cooper S (MCS) and love it. I've done quite a few mods to the drivetrain. It's a great car to drive and have fun with.

Like was mentioned already, if you plan to mod your car, get a supercharged car '02-'06. The aftermarket hasn't yet caught up to the turbocharged '07+ cars just yet, so the older supercharged cars are able to make quite a bit of power right now with mods. Do lots of reading on northamericanmotoring dot com (NAM) as there is alot of information to be had there. Good luck on your decision!
