My first post: Nissan GT-R or Aston Martin V8 Vantage
#77
This is an AWESOME thread. It's funny, because I am going through the exact same thing. I've got an Evo X right now, and the wife's got an Exige S, and I'm looking to upgrade to either a GT-R or an Aston (though I am open to both the DB9 and the V8V, though leaning towards the V8V).
I've also given the XKR some consideration from time to time, so like I said, I'm really loving all the info you've provided.
Whichever I buy will be a DD for me, which has me leaning towards the GT-R if only for the AWD (it does snow here in Northern VA after all), but I have had plenty of RWD cars in the past, so I can make do regardless.
Decisions, decisions

As the owner of a GTR and previous owner of Vantage/DB9
The GTR is an attention hog...gets more looks and more respect then any AM....
The DB9 is the way to go if choosing between either Astons's.......a Vantage is a low end AM and is mostly for the guys who like the vette appeal/driving feel....and step up to the Vantage after the vette....the DB9 is a true Aston martin....v12
The GTR is a supercar with engineering to make most other cars go home begging for a make-over
The GTR is a phenomenal driver with an auto that shifts faster then one can blink....I truly feel special driving the car...when I drove the AM's i felt like a snobby rich *******.....yet I bought them wholesale anyway...The AM'S dont have the character the GTR has....they are simply bred to be loud and cool but not a world class performer....In the end I feel the AM is kind of like having a status car without the status...
The sound system in the GTR is worlds ahead of the AM's....it is unreal...
A nice exhaust system for a GTR is $2k and with a tune the GTR is a 10 second car with the ease of driving daily.....
On the other hand the AM'S are problematic ....have a bull**** warranty that most likely is gone when you get it and the extended is expensive....
I see about 2-3 AM's around weekly .....I see about 1 GTR a month....I live in a high end area of Boca Raton...so the GTR is by far a rarer yet cooler car to see when it comes around....
The GTR is out of production in 2012...so get one now...that is another reason I picked one up ......they will head north in value when after they hit the bottom
The DB9 is the way to go if choosing between either Astons's.......a Vantage is a low end AM and is mostly for the guys who like the vette appeal/driving feel....and step up to the Vantage after the vette....the DB9 is a true Aston martin....v12

Do you have a link to a source for this? I can't find one with a quick google search and this is the first I've heard that they will stop production of the GTR in 2012, as specific date, although I understand thier past history shows GTR production will eventually pause.

Mike-Unfortunatly most of Retarded Munks comments are his own opinion or guess.....like the fact that the GTR is a lower production vehicle than the vantage. Nissan produces about 1000 a month......AM 3-4k/year.

There will be no more than 7500 GT-R's in North America - ever (estimated by Nissan in 2008).
I'd love to see the numbers your fabricating. That means I could get a GT-R for far less than what I'm expecting now.
First year - 2400 (or so) to front load the demand.
But there was an average 'goal' of 1500/yr for 5 years (which puts the last year around 2013, falling inline with the average GT-R run for 4-5 years).
Try looking up facts first, before injecting your own BS.
*Edit: As the numbers sit right now, Nissan may only be releasing 315 GT-R's this MY (2011). So if Aston Martin produce 3K (I don't know if that's accurate or not - I'm only using your made up numbers), that is about 10 times more than the GT-R's being released.

Also, the AM numbers are not North America......production estimates I saw on wiki. Either way they both are rare, I think everyone can agree with this.
**EDIT--saw on another site that AM will make 9,000 total cars/year (rapide, vantage, DB9, DBS). Not certain how many would be the vantage but most likely at or above the 3-4k on wiki.** Keep in mind, this is TOTAL production, not US imports.

As do you...never mentioned North America, but nice spin--Total production. Prior, I did a 10 sec look up and found this site: http://forums.freshalloy.com/showthread.php?t=175956 and on wiki. Saw 1,000/month. Production.

Not even world-wide.
There were only 2400 GT-R's in the country, and 4000 total (when only two markets had them available) as of late last year...
Where are the other 20,000 GT-R's?
Please stop. This was a good thread, until you came in complaining of somebody's opinion (which, I believe he's entitled to have).
I suggest to reeducate yourself before stepping the GT-R side of things without accurate information about the GT-R (unless you included a disclaimer of the information not being accurate). Your OPINION about the GT-R and Aston Martin both being rare is an opinion I agree with. I thought it was best left alone at that.
(Please note - this was only done because the rude nature of the follow-up about the original post of retardedmunk. Normally, I'd just these opinions slide. I was just disturbed about how rude it was)

Point taken.
Either way, you could not go wrong with either car. It depends on the individual as a car is an emotional purchase that pulls on different strings for different people.

Agreed-The internet is not something to quote off, but understand I was not just pulling things out of thin air! His comment about the GTR being so much rarer and cooler to see threw me off a bit which led to my finding those numbers (out of my own curiosity). I should not trust what an internet search pulls up, regardless of if its a credible site.

I'm also surprised about how many people (inlcuding myself) are cross-shopping an Aston Martin and a GT-R... Two completely different market segments.

Let me show you the problem with doing financial arbitrage for a living, when it comes to buying an exotic...this is what I stupidly calculated yesterday:
I've got a very rough estimation of owning a used 2007 Vantage vs a new 2010 Vantage. It incorporates conservative numbers too, with warranty, so no repair costs, and assumes 5k miles drive per year. Depreciation, insurance, (no repairs), conservative maintenance estimates based on what I'm seeing owners report, gas, opportunity cost of paying in cash calculated at 4% interest, and sales tax at 6.5%. Importantly, I'm ignoring ALL visual and performance upgrades on the 07, either one of which would be about $10k, or $20k for both.
The three year costs, then sale at about market price with my assumptions of average $7k annnual depreciation on the 07 (purchased at $75k) and $12k annual depreciation on the new 2010 (purchased at $115k in 2011 as a huge dealer special) are as follows:
Three years cost for 07 Vantage: $57,495.00
Three years cost for 10 Vantage: $75,139.00
So these are very rough, yet relatively conservative estimates of how much you'll be financially behind in life after three years with these cars. This is bad, really bad. Still, I look at it as "my past three years of income savings taking the hit of that amount, then estimating my remaining savings plus future income streams to estimate where I'll otherwise be financially. This seems to stress me out less....
If I treated this as a 0% loan that I had to pay off daily or monthly during the upcoming 3 years, my stomach really turns sour:
Daily cost of 07 Vantage over 3 years: $52.51
Daily cost of 10 Vantage over 3 years: $68.62
or
Monthly cost of 07 Vantage over 3 years: $1,627.71
Monthly cost of 10 Vantage over 3 years: $2,127.22
Furthemore, these figures are ignoring the cost to me to rent a garage at my apartment of $75 extra a month and any elective visual or performance upgrades at all to the car.
To put this in perspective, my rent for a one bedroom apartment, on a lake, 833 sq feet, with fireplace and washer/dryer and big balcony, included access to 2 on site basic gyms, an off site larger gym, two on site swimming pools, one off site swimming pool, two on site movie theaters and two party rooms equipped with Kegerators, huge fireplaces, pool tables, ect, both of which are free for me to use, is a grand total of $840 per month. This is 1/2 the cost I'd pay owning 07 Vantage and almost 1/3 the cost to own a new Vantage. I spent so much time searching for the best apartment deal overall, stressing over the difference of $500-600 extra monthly costs to live and park downtown vs living 4 miles away on a beautiful lake, and that difference is just a tiny fraction of the financial hit I'd take owning a Vantage, especially since GF pays about 1/2 of apartment costs and I pay 100% of Vantage costs. Would I be happier in a apartment 3x the size and 3x as nice as I would with my current apartment and a Vantage? The answer to that, assuming I had to chose one or the other, is I'd take the smaller apartment and the Vantage. But if you throw in the third choice of having the aparment and extra $57k or $75k of cash vs the apartment and Vantage, is a much tougher decision.
As I've said, looking at any exotic in a rational way like this is just going to kill the joy of it. If I drove the car for a total of 2.5 hours one week, which is probably close to actual, my HOURLY COST (applying daily cost of ownership simply to driving time) would be $147 per hour in the 07 or $192 per hour in the new Vantage.
Disgusting.
ETA: I've got these numbers in an excel sheet on another computer. I'll upload the figures or document later for someone to take a look at and perhaps refine the numbers I used. I fear I may have even been too conservative with my numbers, such as assuming a new 2010 could be had for $115 fully loaded as I want it in 2011.

wow.
well, the GTR is now off my list.
Thank you jaspergtr and retardedmunk - you two made up my mind for me!
any group of car people who feel the need to assault other cars are not a group I want to be part of.
maybe I'll get a Vanquish...

Not knocking a Aston..but
so far only 3400 or so Gtr's have been sold...and the 2011 production will be less then 500 and the 2012 even less then that...according to a GM of a Nissan store as well as internet finds...
Damon go get a Vanquish...when it break good luck...are they still making them? I think they stopped in 2007...nice car but underpowered and expensive to repair...
My all time favorite car is a CL65 ..only 194 built for 2 years between 2005 and 2006...this is RARE....
As for a Aston...they are great..I see gorgeous ones going through auction for high $60's....Vantages....but the GTR is just a great car overall and again I emphasize the repairs and warranty....this is crucial...
Most Porsche guys tend to own just Porsches and will step to a GTR as I have seen...some like to step to an Aston but an Aston is not a big deal....to a vette guy a Aston is like the Lambo ...a real exotic to own..
Personally I like them all.......but the GTR is just a modern love for me...you cant get better then that....

I thought it was a rather educating discussion, until a minor issue took root. But that seems resolved, and it appeared both parties agree on the intent of the original comment anyway.
But if you do decide to get a Vanquish (based on more superior logic than Mike is putting into his decision), enjoy the car - it will certainly be one of my personal favorites. Please post pics when you get!
