GTR or 996TT? (modded w/ 700+whp)

Can I please get some input on this? Hopefully from some people that have had both?

I'm Looking to build a 7-800awhp car, originally looking to do a 996TT, but to mod it to the level I want, the math gets a little fuzzy & then I have a bunch of $ into a 10 year old porsche (maintenance?) Hard to beat that GT1 motor in that Porsche though

I also would prefer a newer car,w/ less miles, paddle shifting & the interior of the GTR

I will be using the car for street rollons mainly-some mile events etc..

996TT will cost 40-45k & another 30-35k in mods puts me at 70-80k
GTR will cost 55-60k & another 25-30k in mods puts it at 80-90k

So for virtually the same price (within 5-10k) that is the decision

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!

hmmmm.......well it depends....its a long discussion really.

GTR is good for roll ons....but the gearing is not great for mile runs.

80-90k for a gtr seems about right.

better post on nagtroc regarding GTRs. many experienced guys over there. this is basically a dead forum.

Since there are a few more "Porschephiles" on here it may be a little biased
here's the thread under 996TT/GT2 section w/ more "feedback"

lol! Definitely going to get multiple sets of answers from multiple thread locations...

With about $25k, the GT-R is hard to beat. Add that to a used '09 price ($60-65k), and for about $90k, this car can run 9's all day (and also be a decent daily driver), much like the 996TT (except the amounts might be a little different).

But without a gear change, you're not going to hit too much North of 200mph (and that's if you use tires to overcome the 195 limit - and possibly a slightly higher redline in 6th gear by using software).

lol! No problem... I'm not sure if anybody has changed the gear ratios at all. We've been waiting on this for sometime now. If anybody knows something, please chime in.

I'm deciding between a new(er) GTR (2009, 10 or even '11) and a Porsche GT3 997.1 even maybe a 997.2 if it can be found in the 70K-85K price range...however, I don't plan on any crazy mods for HP.

However, I am curious to see which car has the best platform for the OP's quest.

Both are very capable platforms. But since the OP's has a desire for both street racing AND 200mph + mile events it would seem the Porsche wins out. Its capable of both with its stock gearing while the GTR would need some help in the gearing dept to get past 200+ which could add considerably more to his 80-90k GTR budget as I don't think the necessary gearing/software/r&d etc for mile racing was included in his initial figures. Or it could be relatively cheap depending on how many in the GTR community jumps on the gearing etc.

The Gallardos were limited to around the 200mph range at first because of similar gearing issues. They now have that gearing and you see where they are now. If the GTR is calling you maybe you can wait a bit for someone to develop that gear set. Pretty sure one of the major tuners will have one very soon. It just makes sense with a car this capable of making and putting down significant power.

If you want 200mph+ then definitely go with the Porsche 996TT. The GT-R is still new and it will take some time before a killer mile-run GT-R is available.
