LOL...I can attest to this.

You should have tried to run some cars on half the boost first...then start to turn it up to make it more interesting

What happened to good ol' fashioned drag racing?

Roll racing = wallet racing. Biggest wallet = fastest car. Why waste gas, when you can just compare checking account balances

Drag racing is just kinda boring to me. More stuff breaks when you go from a stop, it's harder to find areas (other than a drag strip) where you can stop safely and race, and other than that you usually don't get as high. Depending on the reaction time, etc. of the other driver you can usually tell who the winner is by about 100mph or so. Most cars don't really get moving until 3rd or 4th gear. I find high speed racing much more entertaining than putting unnecessary strain on my drivetrain and burning up tires just because people think that there's some amount of skill to racing from a stop.. there's very little more to running from a stop than a roll. Especially if the cars that are running are autos..

Both are fine I suppose but I just don't understand why anytime a few people start talking about roll racing, there's always at least one person who has to jump in and go "hey roll racing's for ****, go from a stop and see who the better driver REALLY is." It's not like they're trying to measure who the better driver is... just a friendly match to see which car accelerates quicker. If you want to see who the better driver is, put each driver in the same car and rent a road course for the day and see who gets the fastest lap time..

Not necessarily.

I raced a 90+mm Supra(race gas/around 700whp) from 70mph a while back, and I would venture a guess he had a few more $$ into his car than I had in mine, and I stomped him hard because at that speed, my car in 4th gear/3000rpm was poised atop 500wtq.

He only started to catch me at about 140mph, but it was already over at that point and he was still 2-3 cars back.

I strongly agree with Riceater, to quote:
"It's not like they're trying to measure who the better driver is... just a friendly match to see which car accelerates quicker."

Jamie vs Scott at Mid-Ohio or VIR, they can take turns in the R1KX and UGR TTG to see who posts the fastest lap.

Points may also be awarded for the best smoke show out of the corners...

I've seen Jamie on a road course. I volunteer to drive for him.

I tried to highlight the self-contained flaws (that I perceive).

Starting with #1:
If stuff breaks from a stop, I'd suggest you lost before the race started, because the product is inferior.

It's hard to find a place that is SAFE to stop and race? Other than a drag strip? (you know, those places that are designed with the one specific purpose to allow to stop safely and then race) I find this in direct conflict of the following statement about going 140mph (because stopping safely is difficult, but going 140mph on streets is safer)

Reaction time? Ever heard of an E.T.? (Not the movie) Let me know if reaction time is needed for that. (I'll wait)

100mph? Yeah, that's safe for the public roads... It only takes a few seconds to get to 100mph.

Most cars don't get started until 3rd or 4th gear? I don't even know where to begin on this one...........

If you're burning up tires, you're doing it wrong.

There might be slightly more skill (or knowledge) involved in starting from a stop (evidenced by your burning tire comment).

I guess I'm wrong to imagine that starting from a stop, with an even starting signal (like a light that both drivers see), measuring time, speed, AND who crosses the line first, for speeds up to and over 130mph in a safe controlled environment is silly.

We can spend $10,000's on mods, but not fork over $10 to race on a drag strip?

Sorry, the proximity to the comment about having a problem safely stopping to going 140mph is just plain ironic.

I'm not trying to tell anybody what they are doing is wrong. I'm just trying to understand what the attraction is to intentionally do something that is completely unofficial, giving both parties room to make up excuses for days (I wasn't ready - you said 3 honks - you jumped the start, nah you did, yeah you did, it's on youtube - there was a car in front of me - my power band doesn't start at 40mph - my 5th gear is overdrive - etc...) for an event that has no standard.

What?!
That sentence needs to be structured more appropriately to get your point across, which I guess has something to do with safety.

I was speaking simply of an experience I had that suggests the amount of $$$ spent is not the only factor when it comes to a roll race.

I agree that these crazy cars should line up at the drags, because it is definitely the absolutely safest venue for high speed racing, and will result in real times/mph that can be officially compared, but these are STREET cars, and as such are driven on the street.

Seriously, when a group of car guys get together and decide to roll out from a given speed to a given speed, it is a friendly competition that DOES show which car pulls harder, and does not take into great account the differences in skill level of the respective drivers.

There is a HUGE level of skill associated with getting THE MOST out of any given setup at the 1/4 mile.

You stated there may be "a little" more skill required to launch a car at the strip.
Maybe only "a little" if you are driving an AWD DCT-equipped car, but try a big power 6-speed RWD some time if you never have.

Most of us don't spend our weekends at the track to acquire that skill, but we like to have some fun with our friends bragging about how our car pulled their car, and so on.

I don't see the big problem with roll racing , if that is the desired race.
I do allow that it brings into play room for excuses, but if everyone leaves their egos at the door, what's the issue?

The biggest problem with "unofficial" roll races is the EGO!
