Looking at a GTR, need advice

Hello All,

So I'm looking to buy a used GTR and my price range is 50-55k. I honestly do not have any experience with performance cars and/or parts but have always dreamed of having a monster sports car since I was a kid. Now I'm 30, I have a solid job, and I'm looking to have some fun. I absolutely love the way the car looks and from what I've read and heard from friends who car enthusiasts, it's THE car to buy if you can afford it and you want to have fun. I've never driven a performance vehicle before so this is a new venture for me. I'd be daily driving this GTR and wanted to know if 50-55k would be enough to purchase it in good condition.

Also, would there be any pitfalls that I need to avoid when looking to buy? Any advice you could throw to someone in my situation?

Thank you!

they are nice cars but not sure if u can get a nice 09s for your budget. Why not get at least a 2010 or newer for factory warranty purposes and 09s are notorious with the tranny issue ($10k to replace). Avoid highly modded ones because they're the ones that were raced and beat on. If you can use your $50k as a down payment for a 2013 or 2014 and keep it bonestock you'll be better off with peace of mind.

I just did a search and for what its worth you could probably get an 09 in great condition for $60K...if you waited and were patient I could see you finding one sometime this coming Winter for $55K but getting one right now at $50K...unless you have a family member looking to keep the car in the fam and not looking for money you are likely getting one with high miles!

I purchased my first GT-R 3 years ago secondhand (MY09), wrote it off (ill leave that and the pics to another thread), then purchased a new MY11 so speaking from a little experience here. The above advice is the best but if you cant do that within your budget then there are a few things you should look out for:
  1. If there is even a whiff that the car was in accident, dont touch it, these vehicles are very specialised and its really hard to repair them properly, trust me, i know
  2. Avoid the heavily modded ones, unless you like endless headaches and lots of downtime. Lightly modded are no problem but then see no.2
  3. Avoid vehicles that were launched with traction control off, this places lots of stress on the box. A GT-R tech can check this for you.
  4. Check the discs for cracks that are deep enough to put your nail in, if so they will need to be replaced soon. The aftermarket stuff doesn't crack and are cheaper than oem
  5. Check tyre tread, budget for a new set if necessary
  6. Lastly Join GTRlife (formerly NAGTROC) and check with them on specifics when you find one that you're interested in

These cars are awesome and they are by no means expensive to maintain or made of glass, as long as you do your homework

If you can wait, prices are 10 % lower in winter. Oct to Feb is prime time.

i bought my 2010 with 9800 miles on the clock with factory warranty and within a 1000 miles my tranny was shredding metals but due to existing factory warranty the dealer was compelled to replace it with a factory fresh 2012 free of charge including a rental car for a week this tells you how important warranty is.

I think it's like 7 years or something... I don't remember. At least 5 years.

There is a GT-R for sale on GTRLife for $55k. Just saw it today.

I'd check it out. These cars are quite reliable.

The factory warranty is the power train warranty. Some 09 cars came with an extended 7 year warranty purchased by the original owner . Your basic warranty is used up because of time for the 09 model.
