Questions on cleaning/detailing

OK, any suggestions on how to keep this darn car clean? Pollen is killing me.

Question #1: I don't have a garage. What are your thoughts on the California Car duster to sweep away the nightly pollen buildup? Good/bad? Any other products you suggest?

Question #2: What type of tire shine do you guys use/recommend. The stuff I have a garbage (got it at Target, don't even know what the hell it is but it sucks salty hairy donkey *****). Lasts maybe a day before it fades.

Question #3: How the **** do you get your windshield/windows streak free???? I've tried everything and no matter what 2 days after I clean the windows they look like **** from all the streaks.

That's all for now. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You have to be really careful with the California Car Duster. I use it on very rare occassions when my car might have some slight dust. Even then I am very cautious. I barely touch the fibers to the car and shake after each and every panel.

I would never use it when covered with pollen. Pollen is very abrasive and will let to marring if not removed properly. Since most marring and swirls are introduced through improper washing, its always been my experience that if the car is dirty that it's just best to take the time and wash it properly. You will be happy in the long run.

It really depends on what type of gloss that you want. Some of the ones that I use frequently are Zaino Z16 or Meguiars All Season Dressing. I find that they tend to provide a nice gloss, don't attract dust and dirt, and last a fairly good amount of time.

My favorite glass cleaners are Meguiars NXT Glass Cleaner and Zep Glass Cleaner. You can get the Meguiars at most retail stores. The Zep (non-ammonia) is awesome and is available in a concentrated form at Home Depot. Its more economical that most glass cleaners and after getting a sample from a friend its all I will ever use now. A gallon is like $9.99 and will make like 32 gallons lol. I clean my glass with a dedicated short nap waffle weave type micro fiber towel and followed up with a second towel to avoid any streaks.

That's all for now. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If you have more questions just let me know.

Pat is the man, especially after seeing his black Z. I would have sworn it was wet when I saw it! With washing you should also get yourself a foam gun, its the ****!!!!!

Bottom line is, with a dark car there are no short cuts. If you take a short cut you are going to swirl the paint or create hair lines.

I agree with Kevin. The Gilmour Foam Gun is awesome. Your neighbors will never look at you the same way when you wash you car with it. If you want even more foam get a foam cannon for your power washer. It puts out foam like you can't even imagine

Thanks for the info Pat. This pollen is just killing me lately. What is the advantage of using a foam gun? Also, when washing the car what kind of mitt do you guys use. I currently use a mitt I got from Target, which really again kind of sucks (I have to stop shopping for car care crap there).

For waxes, I did get the Zaino Z2, Z5 and Z6. I'm fairly happy with them.

The foam gun acts as a lubricant between the mitt and the paint. You shoot the foam on the car while it is dry and the soap allows the wash mitt to glide over the paint not causing surface scratches or swirls. If you want to stop over after cars and coffee on Saturday morning, I will be cleaning Jon's car with him and you can check it out.

I use a lambs wool mitt. One for the paint and a separate one for the wheels. I also use two separate buckets ,so not to contaminate the paint from the wheel dirt.

I also use sheepskin wash mitts like Kevin. Two bucket method with dedicated buckets for washing. One to rinse the mitt after every panel. I also have 2 grit guards in my buckets to keep the dirt from rising back up from the bottom.
I always use a separate dedicated bucket for wheels. It probably one of the safest methods to wash the car.

The foam gun just allows you to presoak your car (not in the sun). You can also flood each panel with soap as you wash.

Here is a video.

Zaino is a great choice.

Thanks for the input. Kevin I'll definately take you up on the offer Saturday if it's still on the table. Something tells me I'll be going shopping for some supplies afterword.

Pat, thanks for the vid. I kinda get it now.

Come on by. We will probably leave cars and coffee early so that Jon can get all cleaned up in time to make it to the car show.

Kevin,
Does that foam gun have a built-in water filter? Also, safe to assume you can use any liquid cleaner you want on the gun?

It has a filter at the end of the intake. You can use any liquid cleaner in it. I sometimes mix regular wash soap and a mild citrus degreaser when I am doing a full correction on a client's car. The foam clings to the paint and makes removal of stuck on dirt and tar much easier to remove.

I think I'm gonna order this foam gun

http://www.autodetailingsolutions.co...r-wash-gun.htm

Comes with a free wash mitt and some cleaner. Doesn't seem like a bad deal for $55.
