I'd like to add my 99 cents to this thread.
The notion that the Boxster is easy to drive fast is laughable. Compared to what? A 911. The two can not be compared.
If all things were equal. A Boxster mid engine that had the same size wheels, same engine, same brakes, same aero down force wings, add some traction control, AWD, and PASM. Now you can compare. The Boxster would now be easier to drive as fast as a 911. It doesn't take a highly skilled driver to drive a 911 fast, it takes a highly skilled driver to not toss it into a ditch or wall at the track which is caused by snap oversteer which is the inherant flaw in the rear engine platform. It requires skill to not upset the balance of the car while trying to go fast. A Boxster is balanced and nuetral by nature of the mid engine design. Evidence can be found in the amount of 911's crashed. Porsche solution to this flaw was to add big rear wings, wide rear fender, big rear rubber even the eventual AWD and traction control. Porshce itself know this, but wont' admit it publicly because it is commited to the design and can't turn back. Name one other rear engine sports car. You can't because it is not the ideal platform. The 911 is where Porsche make's most all of it's profits. Building a Boxster or Cayman on par with a 911 would be suicide. Also, where do you think the 911 was derived from? The VW Beattle. Dr.Porsche designed it and when he started his own company he used the same basic design for the 911. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not disrespecting a 911 what so ever. It's just a fact.
With that said, I find it interesting that most people believe that the 911 is the superior platform in which it gained it's storied history. To the contrary. Porsche Motorsports, the division that heads the engineering, design, support and production of the RSR race cars is not allowed to race the RSR's in any class but the GT or GT3 by Porsche itself. Porsche has won more GT class championships with the 911 than any other mark hands down. But you have to consider that the 911 is raced in the GT or GT3 class of international endurance sports car racing. The class that has the slowest cars of all sports car racing and not many rivals except Ferrari. Why? If Porsche stepped up to the GT1 class it would have to compete amongst exotic production based supercars like the Maserati MC12, Ferrari 550's, Saleen's, Spyker's, Lamborghini, Mclaren, Aston Martin DB9R, even the Corvette Racing team that has won Le Mans 5 years in a row. GT1 class is above a 911 and Porsche chooses to race in the GT class in order to market it's 911 due to homogolation rules. Porsche has won the GT1 class at Le Mans with their 911 GT1, but it is mid engine not rear. Porsche is not competing against the best in the world with it's 911 platform and to some degree the RSR's are factory supported cars. The full factory efforts by Porsche were and are all mid engine based race cars. Period!
Porsche's storied racing history comes from it's domination amongst the best in Group C, Prototypes, the GT1 full factory efforts at the highest level of endurance racing around the world with the legendary 908's,962's, and 956's. These were the cars that ran at 250/260 mph down the Mulsane straight at Le Mans.
Now they produce the LMP2 class RS Spyder's racing in ALMS and around the world. Once again not the highest level of sports car racing.. and the Spyder's are not Factory efforts. They only manufacture the cars and support the customer teams. Once again mid engine, but not at the highest level. If they ran the RS Spyder's in LMP1 it would be against the Factory Audi R10's and Factory Peugeot's, Creation, and Spyker's and these car are like F1 cars. The RS Spyder wouldn't have a chance in terms of speed.
Porsche is one of the greatest sports car companies in the world. It is the most profitable car company in the world because it sell a lot of 911's. Why? Because the 911 is one of the only car's in the world that can be driven daily and also taken to the track with unmatched performance. It does both perfectly. Porsche know's what they are doing. They build great street sports cars and make a ton of money doing so and if you want to race one, you can buy one of those too in a GT3 cup car for $200,000 or a GT3 RSR for $510,000 plus. Porsche produces and sells more race cars than any manufacturer in the world. Why? Because it makes them a ton of money too.
Sorry for the long winded post!

Sorry for the long winded post!
ALMS 2008 series GT1 ( 2 race teams ) 1 corvette C6.r and 1 Aston DB9. Boy I wish I raced that series this year with my stock GT3 RS. I would have taken third in the series got a lot of TV time and wouldn't have spent anything. People don't race this series because the larger V8's and 10's are more easily changed to 1000hp beasts. Very hard to compete against when you have a flat 6 platform. Sorry.
ALMS 2008 series GT2 ( The slow race class as you speak )
2 Ford GT's, 3 Ferrari F430's Astons Corvettes Panoz's Viper BMW and those ridiculously slow RSR's by Porsche. Boy I would have hated being in that series. Boring probably wouldn't even have fun at all.
As far as them delving into GT1 they did a few years ago.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_911_GT1
GT1 requires production based cars so they got out. They did ok the first year with the GT1 winning Lemans. Got out because they didn't want to produce the car globally.
Yes do I agree lots of porsches are wrecked on tracks (I've done it) but you'd have to agree a lot of fricken porsches are getting tracked. It's a numbers game. You can roll a Lotus Elise as easy and it all comes down to driving.
I raced a GT3 Cup for a bit and won't even drive a awd 911 hard anymore. It's not the way the cars should be driven. This violent "snap oversteer created by the major flaw in rear engine design" you speak is the reason the car is fun to drive. People roll cars of all makes all the time. It's because they push them beyond their limits. PERIOD.
Yes Porsche then steps to LMP with the Spider but hell none of us can afford to race those ventures. Yes the Cups are 169k to buy plus 30k in upgrades to race and NOT everyone can get. Very limited production 50 per year for the US and the RSR's are in the 600k range but make sure you have a 10 million dollar team behind you before asking PMS for one. They will cost you 100k weekend to run on the smallest side and most spend 250k a weekend to run. But all Brands are the same. Step into the Aston Ferrari whatever and you better have some bucks behind you.
And yes Porsche is in it for Money.
What are you in business for?

Good post Mark.
People are getting upset when the car they drive being critique. That's totally understandable. It shows that people on here all have passions and appreciations for cars and not just driving from point A to point B.

haha thanks josh.. i might have to take you up on that offer! im thinking about doing a face lift.. been wanting to for awhile now but i didnt really want to spend that kind of money on it. since this came up and im required to spend some money for repairs i was thinking about something like bruce did on his 996.
theres a boxster in cali that did a face lift awhile back and he also had an article in the mags.. thought it was pretty nice looking.
what do you guys think?..
ill just stick to my boxster and track that in the near future so if anything happens i wont feel so bad and wont be in a big money pit compared to other cars out there! from the sounds of it.. i dont even think i can afford to buy myself mcdonalds if i sell my boxster and go buy a 911 or anything else period haha

While you in the mood, let me have the unuse half of that Ducati once you dissect it up for wall decorations.

No what I am saying is with that much flash it should have the power to perform as well. I feel the same way about a Techart 996 c2 way over kill on a car that will never live up to the performance it should based on looks.
BTW I thought you were getting her the Ferrari California Spyder? Are you getting cheep or do you not like her as much as you used to?

LOL you guys are to much.. that kit is one sweet looking kit though.. is it me or is it everytime you want to do something new to the car.. theres always a minor set back that occurs that following week or month? seems to happen to me all the time when i have a new idea for one of my projects!

^^that's just bad luck. that's life. whenever you are all set and stable, something happens. lol! maybe it's your cars way of telling you "no! don't do it!". j/k....j/k
as you know ken, when you ask for advice or opinions, you are always going to get all kinds of different answers. some are for the mods, some not so much. it's always great to get different views and opionions. this group of guys/gals know their stuff. they are huge enthusiasts just like you. but when it comes right down to it, you need to do what makes you happiest. sometimes you'll choose to do something that not everyone will agree with or think looks the best. what matters most is if you are happy with your choices. do you think everyone loves my pink calipers? hehe! NOT! but all in all, they make me happy and i'm glad it did it. resale value wise? definately not the smartest thing i've ever done. lol! but it's been worth it to me and i've been happy with my choice. my car reflects my personality, that's why i did it. some love it, some hate it. as long as i like it, that's what's important.
so....i say, enjoy your car! understand you probably won't get your $$ back in your mods if/when you sell it. but....if it makes you happy and you like it, then all the power to you my friend!
