BMW M1, Super Rare, Influenced by Lamborghini?!

Alright, your probably wondering why I posted this sweet find in Other Italian Supercars, the reason is the BMW M1 was actually developed jointly with Lamborghini!

I never knew that until I started doing research on WikiPedia. The engine is a Lamborghini and obviously the body style was heavily influenced by Lamborghini as well.

The only thing BMW about this car (in appearance anyway) is the front grill (albiet much less pronounced) and the racing paint job.

Hope you enjoy it, I cant take credit for the find, it was on one of my RSS blog feeds.

Pics after jump (perhaps someone can post them here too?)

PS: This car is number 1 of 79 M1s made in 1979, how rare?!

Beautiful car! Correct me if I'm wrong but while the body of the M1 was developed by Lamborghini, the straight-6 in the M1 was designed and built solely by BMW.

Hmm according to the blog I subscribe to (findsoftheday.com) it said it was a lambo engine and body design I believe, I think that's what wikipedia says too when I looked, could be wrong?

From my quick research:

The M1 had the M88/1 which was based on the M49 engine which was used in the BMW 3.0CSi

The body is very obviously lambo influenced.

engine was definintely BMW, also originally Lambo was to help build cars, but they went south financially, so apparently BMW raided the forms and made them without Lambo.

basically the same engine that went in the first M5. Very stressed, and complicated.
