I want more exhaust bark but not more drone: possible?

Currently I have the stock exhaust on my 16 E-Hybrid and I was thinking of retrofiting the Porsche's Sport Exhaust. The stock exhaust is very quiet, the only time I hear it is when it drones between 1,600 and 2,000 RPM. That's how I know I have an exhaust. Not cool.

I was wondering if I could get more bark under acceleration, but without getting more droning when cruising at 80 mph / 1,800 RPM. The reason I'm thinking PSE instead of an aftermarket is because PSE has the on-off switch so potentially it would be just as quiet as stock when cruising, but louder when jumping on it. Thoughts?

I have aftermarket and it has a drone at 1800-2000. I have to be over 80 for it to go away

Is it louder than the drone you had with the stock? That's what I want to avoid, if possible.

Would that create any problems with the emissions? How complicated it is to do? I'm sorry, I don't know much about exhausts ...

Im in a 4S 3.0tt and I didnt remember any drone before I went aftermarket. On my car I believe its from removing the center resonator

It sounds crazy but a mullfer delete leaving everything else stock will give you the noise you're looking for. The cats and resonator(s) take care of the drone while cruising.
It will really rip under WOT but have a nice rumble the rest of the time.

If that's not your forte then cat-delete can provide some real grunt under WOT & load.

By "rip" you mean the raspy look-at-my-huge-pipe Honda sound? Is it reversible in case I don't like it?

Not at all - we're not talking 4 cylinder rasp here. Yes, reversible by reinstalling the mufflers.

Thanks, I will talk to a local exhaust shop and see if they can do it.

Basically, no exhaust modification aft of the cats affects emissions legally or otherwise..
Exhaust drone is a universal problem with any "straight through" muffler design. Manufacturers address performance exhausts with "echo chambers" aka Helmholtz chambers and/or "active exhaust valves".
Corsa uses helmholtz chambers and carefully tunes their exhaust for each application.
Porsche's sport exhaust has an active exhaust valve,so do some Corvettes and Jaguars. The valve is closed during light throttle (high drone) driving and exhaust gas is routed through a conventional-design muffler which has restrictive chambers that cancel the drone. When the valve opens under hard acceleration exhaust gas routes partially through straight through muffler chambers. Drone does not exist under wide open throttle (WOT).
Some forum members have removed central exhaust resonators for more sound and claim there is no drone.
You can spend big $$$ for the Porsche sport exhaust, but this is not the only option. Consider also electric exhaust cut-out valves. They would be my choice. I would place them just forward of the rear mufflers.

Very informative, thank you. Couple questions as follow-up:
1. Which option do you think has greater potential of *increasing* the drone? The removal of the mufflers or the resonator?
2. Any recommendation for the electric exhaust cut-out valves?

No doubt whatsoever that the rear mufflers are the key element in reducing drone. The resonators do not materially affect drone.
BTW, the major manufacturer of active exhaust systems is USA's Tenneco. They make through their Walker subsidiary exhausts for Land Rover and Jaguar.
I suspect that Porsche uses an outside supplier for its exhaust systems. Who?
First consideration in an electric exhaust cut-out is to determine your exhaust pipe diameter. Then just Google the subject. You will probably get references to Summit Racing, Jegs and eBay. Maybe even Amazon. As always, quality will vary, so do some research of product reviews.

I was in a similar situation where I had the PSE on my ‘10 4S but got the AWE Tuning Track exhaust because I couldn’t hear the exhaust.

Sounds excellent IMO - the true sound of the Porsche V8. I only get noticeable drone at around 45mph but is as if stock on highway speeds. May be the Helmholtz mufflers working.

It’s also quiet at idle so feels like the best of both worlds even though I lost the exhaust valve button. (Saves me from having to push it open every time I start the car!)

Has anyone here sampled AWE's "Touring Edition" cat-back system on a 970 Turbo?
