1,2,4 misfire and rattle

Hi all,

970, 60k miles.

Started getting hesitation on acceleration, especially in sport mode, and a rather loud rattle when accelerating a bit more aggressively from what sounds like the right bank.

OBD gives no faults but in live view it shows that I'm getting a few misfires on cylinders 1, 2 and 4. I am however getting high counts, in the low thousands of "M100_Ignition misfire detection counter". It adds them in steps of 50 to 80 in a few second, goes up to 3,000 at times and then disappears. I have no clue what this means and can't find anything on it.

Indy changed all my sparks today (originals), rotated the coils which were all fine seemingly. Drove home just now 500 buck lighter and no difference, hesitation and a rattle on acceleration.

I know for a fact that my intake valves are caked up in carbon and am planning on brining it into the dealer for a walnut blast along with injectors and fuel rail ultrasonic cleaning.

Could this be the reason or any other ideas?

Dealer is a cool 100 miles away though and am not sure if I should drive like this.

Thanks!

So you rotated the coils and the misfires stayed on the 1, 2 and 4 cylinders? My first thought was you should have changed coils with the plugs, but if the misfire doesn't move with the coil rotation, something else is going on. Since they are all on the same side of the engine, that might be a clue.

IMO if you know history of car, you will know if it is more than 40k miles from last plug and coil change. If you dont, assume they have not been. By the info, I would say coils and/or plugs need replace. Your indy did plug change and rotated coils, but did he test them? You can test their impedance and voltage to see if deviates from nominal. Even then, sometimes not working good. So best to have them replaced with new ones.

Read this thread about maintenance intervals for 970 panamera....plugs for turbo - every 30k miles...and coils get replaced with plugs every time.
If you still get misfires, most likely your coils are in need of service. You are shooting in the dark until that is known.

If you do decide to drive it, turn off all sport modes, auto start, etc. and drive slow. If you have another ride, order coils online and when they arrive, follow DIY on here to replace. Very easy, couple hours work. Save you another 500 bucks.
