Michigan's premier Road Rally, would like to give you a brief overview:

I wanted to take a quick moment to make you aware of a local driving event that is sure to be a great time for all of those in attendance. It’s the 2012 MotorCity Gumball Rally. This year’s event will take place over September 22 & 23. This two day rally is filled with plenty of great checkpoints and challenges during the trip with a chance to win up to 15% of all the entry fees collected. Please note this is not a race and speeding does not help you to win.

I participated in a rally similar to this last year and I know that you will greatly enjoy yourself. You will meet a lot of people and especially enjoy the large “rolling car show“ experience.
If you are not able to participate in the rally, please join us on Sunday, September 23 as we host a Cauley Car Show at our dealership which will also be the finishing checkpoint for the MotorCity Gumball Rally. This way you get to partake in some of the excitement without doing the entire rally. More details of the car show will be released as it gets closer but mark your calendars now.

MotorCity Gumball Rally

General Synopsis

The MotorCity Gumball Rally is a road rally throughout Michigan. Speeding will not help you. It's a rally, not a race. Although the route has to stay secret, I can tell you that it will start downtown, head to the west side of the state and then go north into the Traverse City area where you'll be staying at Crystal Mountain, it's a 5 star spa and resort. There will also be a big banquet for all the drivers and staff. Both of those are included with your entry fee. The next morning you'll be taking off and heading east, then south, back to Cauley Performance Automotive where there will be a big car show and bbq for the arrival and awards ceremony. There is a cash prize which will be based on the number of teams, 15% of the entry fees goes to first place, 5% goes to second, and 2% goes to third. So, for example, if there are 50 teams, first gets $7,500, second gets $2,500, and third gets $1,000. Traxxas has also supplied a $400 r/c car and Escort radar detectors has provided a Susan G. Komen Edition Passport 9500 radar detector which, because the organizers have a sense of humor, will be given out AFTER the rally.
How to Play

There will be 10 checkpoints over 2 days. Each checkpoint will have a secret target time which will be based on the speed limit. Using a 60 minute target time with a 2 minute window as an example, if you get there between 59 and 61 minutes, you get a perfect 1000 points for that checkpoint. For every minute outside of that window you are late, you lose 10 points, for every minute outside that window that you are early, you lose 20 points because, although speeding isn't technically against the rules, it does need to be actively discouraged for insurance purposes. Furthermore, 5 of the 10 checkpoints will have have challenges for extra points and/or prizes, something to get you out of the car and moving around a little bit. All scoring is digital and you will need a smart phone to run in the rally. At the launch point, and each individual checkpoint, you will scan a QR code and go. Each unique QR code logs a geolocation/time stamp for scoring. It will also give you a city and a clue as to where the checkpoint is in that city. Now using the clue and the magic of Google, your partner will figure out exactly where you need to go. This also means they will have something to do besides sleep. If you can't figure it out, you can call and get the address, but it will cost you 100 points. So, for that checkpoint, your maximum possible score will be 900 points. As previously mentioned, 5 of the 10 checkpoints will have a challenge. For those checkpoints, you will scan in, complete your challenge, and scan out to restart your clock. The checkpoints without a challenge will simply be scan-and-go.
The Cost

The entry fee is $1,000 ($500 each between you and your partner) which can be paid in installments with a minimum down payment of $250. Most, if not all, drivers register and then go to local business they frequent, (e.g. bars, restaurants, performance shops, etc.) and obtain sponsorships to cover the rest. There is no limit to how many sponsorships you can obtain, nor is there a limit to how much each sponsor is allowed to give you. That is between you and your sponsor. The rally has nothing to do with it. MotorCity Gumball, LLC. has also partnered with one of the benefiting charities, the World Motor Sports Breast Cancer Foundation, so your entry fee is mostly tax deductible. Once you have paid in full, WMSBCF will send you a digital donation receipt.
The Point

The entire purpose of this rally is not to make a profit or even to win the purse. It's to raise money and, more importantly, awareness for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, the World Motor Sports Breast Cancer Foundation, and Animal Aid, all while having a fun weekend that you'll never forget and making tons of new friends.
