2011 Cayenne Transfer case replaced
#316
Hey guys I have posted this before but it makes sense to post this again while the conversation is currently at this state. This is my paperwork from January when I had mine replaced under a 3 month used car warranty from the Mercedes dealership I purchased my 2011 from. Hope this helps a few of you in this thread.

So the dealer finally sent the transfer case fluid, got hung up waiting for another part and may gave dropped the ball.
Some dealers wont ship, they claim it’s a hazardous material.
The dealer supplied exactly 850 ml., seems a bit low? when I filled the last time with Ravenol (1 liter) it ran out of the fill plug like the diff's. Still have ~100-150 ml left over.
I guess Porsche knows best shipping an exact amount. I drained 900ml of the Ravenol, measured by pouring it into the Porsche bottle.
Ravenol transfer fluid TF-0870 after 2900 miles
New Porsche fluid. Couldn't get the pump to drain the entire bottle so I used a syringe to get the rest of the fluid in.

My 2013 Cayenne base has the same symptoms at 4th and 5th gear, and I have been driving it for 2 years. Sometimes it is better (just after oil change), but sometimes it is worse (carry more passengers). I didn't know what it is until I read this post today! The car is out of warranty now (expired in November 2016). Any suggestion on how to communicate with the dealer to get the TC repaired? Thanks!

I changed mine after 5,000 miles on the Porsche fluid - and it was dark, but not quite as dark as yours - but my TC also wasn't really noticeably misbehaving either when I did the first change.
BTW - when I bought the Porsche fluid it came in a liter bottle.. filled with a liter of fluid. Odd the 850cc bottle, but I guess maybe they figured that everyone was just tossing out the 150cc left over after a change, and it's environmentally better to ship the exact amount needed.

We'll see how it does with the Ravenol - I'm taking it to California next month, and then back to NJ in January so that should be a good test.

Add me to the XFerCase list!
Add me to this list, 2014 Cayenne S diesel, 37,000 miles, new transfer case fitted under warranty in UK - all usual symptoms in evidence - a very poor show from a car maker like Porsche!

Thanks for all who are participating in this thread. I have a 2015 Cayenne Turbo with just over 40K miles. Slow speeds and tight turning create a sluggish feel and slightly more noises while driving, Would people recommend a fluid change?
Happy Holidays..

Yes - won't hurt. No real downside to doing one. Just be really careful tightening the two plugs in the case - one guy overtightened and cracked his case. The factory torque is 15fl/lb. I used 12 ft/lbs and no leaks.. either Ravenol or the factory juice is fine. Ravenol comes in a neat container complete with a pull out hose making filling it REALLY easy. 10 minute job if you can get under the P!G.

Rebuild?
Still no rebuilds out there?
I found a company on Ebay that sells remaufactured units out of Lithuania. They do lots of German transmissions apparently. They also have some parts available - chains, friction plates, etc.
I would think something in the unit is failing regularly and that part(s) has to be repairable by a decent transmission specialist. The units Porsche is reinstalling are all remanufactured as well so somehow they are being repaired. I also imagine the failures are so common and often that they are likely the same faulty parts. Maybe not though...

Update: With 162k on the dial the second fluid change (Porsche fluid) seems to have remedied the trumping or nut cracking sound under acceleration, and no low speed shudder in the last 1000+ miles. extremely smooth now.Fingers still crossed.

Tire Pressure (radius) maybe related with TC issue
Hello all,
I also have same TC problem that explained in here and would like to share my experience. Please forgive my english (Grammer ect..), I am not native English speaker.
I bought my 2011 Cayenne S 95000mi about 5 month ago as used from Porsche dealer. Currently no problem except that weird random jerking. Based on history, The TC replaced with new version at 62000mi with some update.
I found some interesting thing possibly related with tire.
1. History of the car.
At 47k mi only Rear tires changed, 56k Mi dealer changed front tires only after that 62k Mi the TC replaced - Rear will almost half let after 10k mi so... front larger condition.
Mine has tire history 77317 mi, all new tires and 92k mi left front tire only changed. The thread difference between LF RF is less than 2mm so SA said it will be fine especially with updated TC.
2. Experience.
The tire pressure was 41psi F 49psi R when they gave me the car. But the ride was too rough and feels like it is too high so I searched the manual and changed to manual suggested comport pressure. Ride feels good but some weird thing happen with this setting. The problem was when stoping at the rad light 3rd to 2nd gear car was jerking/Surging with some hard shifting between 3rd to 2rd (Like 3rd to 2nd shifting delayed to the RPM gose too low than shifted to 2nd and the RPM too high for idle control...).
At this point I found the manual and PCM info for tire PSI is different (Maybe it was updated) so tried PCM comport tire pressure buy Same issue above. so tried PCM standard part load and no more same issue, which was 38 PSI F, 42 PSI R. But after changed to standard I got another problem which is same with all TC issues in here. 3rd 4rd accelation hesitation, feels like a lot of small bump or craves.
Thus I planing to change the TC fluid, went dealer yesterday to buy TC oil (but have not changed it yet). And I had a free inspection coupon so used it when I visited. Just after I received car from service department I feel like the TC problem was gone (or at least hard to feel). Only one possibility is the tire pressure, they changed to 41F 49R again.
So maybe..
Porsche suggest higher pressure for rear (which is same for almost all rear wheel drive cars) that make the rear radius larger (at least from wheel to road when loaded).
Cayenne usually worn out rear first - front going larger.
So need higher pressure for rear if the tire has longer mileage.
in my case. if the rear larger is standard it make sense that the different tire pressure could make these symptoms.
1. problem with braking at comport pressure - front rear almost same psi (2~3 psi differ) - with 20k tires the rear will be smaller.
2. problem with acceleration at standard pressure - rear 4 psi higher (4~6 psi differ) - with 20k tires maybe same radius.
3. no problem with TC - rear 8 psi higher - with 20k tires maybe rear larger.
About rebuilt TC
Could not find this on google so I searched with my language
Here is TC result with picture by a transmission repair company in South Korea.
They said the ;transfer case chain stretched' and 'disk pack burnt'

Add me to the list as well.
2012 Cayenne S
50,300 miles
Shudder not just on turns but once it started it was all the time. Around 2nd to 4th gear mainly. Diagnosed at dealership and replaced with the new design, new vent line and reprogrammed. Cost was paid for by Autonation 90 day used car warranty - thankfully!
A couple of notes-
1) The SA at Porsche West Houston has been there a long time and he is good. He noted that issue has been an overheating issue and that the new design has fixed it. We shall see but at least they are acknowledging and attempting to address it with a new design as many have seen. I asked why it hadn't been recalled and he sort of exhaled as this probably comes up every day. Unfortunately so far Porsche is claiming it is not a safety issue but just a quality of driving issue so they have yet to offer the recall. Who knows perhaps one day they will so I'd save my receipts just in case.
2) I corresponded with a super guy in Lithuania who claims these cases can likely be repaired. His company does all sorts of European transmissions and transfer cases. The items he noted that were typical fails were the clutch discs and the chain. He did make a point that we needed to verify the particular unit before proceeding. There are numbers on the bottom of the transfer case and from there he could identify whether his company could help. The two likely cases are the PL72ATC which is the active transfer case and the most common option and the other is a PL72T with a Torsen differential. The company name is AWD Tech. I have not used him but if my replacement was not covered I was going to try them out - assuming the fluid swap didn't help. He was very responsive and knowledgeable and if you have a good local transmission shop they should be able to break it down and replace with the AWD Tech parts if needed.
Has anyone tried to rebuilding one of these?
