V8V Extra key cost

Some of the used V8V for sale have only one key. Sometimes it's crystal, and sometimes it's just a plastic one. Regardless, I think having a spare key should be mandatory for any car. I assume the only way to get a second key is via the dealer. (I've seen that if you have two different keys, you can program additional ones yourself in the car, but that doesn't help if you only have one.) Can anyone give me a ballpark of what a plastic second key & programming would cost? thanks

I still need to buy my spare plastic key. The dealer quote from about 3 months ago was in the neighborhood of $1,350 with programming.

You can get a used one, but you need to make sure you get the programming code with it.
And then you can have the dealer program it.

I have purchased both glass and plastic, twice.

From dealer in UK, £950 and £400 respectively. From Aston Specialist, £875 and £375 respectively.

Both new, with codes (on plastic cards) and both prices included coding to the car.

If you have a working/coded plastic key, you can turn it into a glass one by buying a glass key s/h (ebay etc) with no codes. This should be about 40-70% of the price of equivalent condition glass keys with codes.

You can then transfer the insides of your plastic key (which is already coded) to your glass one, then buy a much cheaper new valet (plastic) key with a code and have the dealer code it (or do it yourself).

Be careful that the DB9 and Vantage have different frequencies and they can't be programmed unless you have the original code that came with the key, so beware if buying used.

I'd like to put together a group buy at my local dealership. If we could get 5-10 owners interested in a 2nd key, maybe the dealer will reduce cost to as low as possible?

Depending on the price (discount) I might be interested, for my 2015 DB9. Can a dealer program a key purely on the basis of the VIN, or would they need to have the car physically with them? The latter would be difficult for a group buy.

Would a dealer program a key for a car remotely with just a VIN - even if they could? That could seem to lead to some easy grand theft after peering through windeshields?

I ordered my "valet key" from Aston Martin Bits, so it came with the UK frequency.
I ordered a Volvo key and reused its internal, and then had the dealer program the immobilizer part of the key, and used ThinkDiag to program the lock/unlock (thanks to @Tashakes )
See the thread here : https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...frequency.html
Happy to help if needed!

I'd be up for that (depending on discount). Especially since your local dealer is the same as my local dealer

thanks

Hello EJ, Is the Volvo key part number 30772198. Did you get it from Volvo direct or are there aftermarket parts?

Yes, this is the good part number.
I got it from a third-party supplier. Same product, without the dealer markup...

Make sure you get one with the right operating frequency because I think that the one the US uses is different to some other countries. I bought 30772194 for my UK spec 2011 Virage which is a 433Mhz one.
