CA License Fee -- supposed to be 1.15% of purchase price... mines a lot more, wtf

I'm looking at the registration renewal fee for my Maserati here.
I bought the Maser. for $73,000 (before TTL) about 8 months ago.

The license fee is $1321
Reg is $5
County Fees $10
Smog Abatement $20

Total: $1407

The license fee is supposedly 1.15% of the purchase price, which would make mine $839.50
Anyone know why I am being charged $1321??

How do I go about contesting the amount??

150shot is infamous around these parts
That sounds about right, I dont know the exact calculations but reg. and VLF goes up and down but stays up for high end cars....write off in April what you can at least..

I talked to AAA once (easiest access to DMV people that sorta know) and no use really in fighting it- its you vs. the state of CA.

Please follow the following link and make sure that your purchase price is reflected correclty on your current registration

I also disputed mine by making a face-to-face appointment at DMV as my 05 Turbo-S was valued at 105K (ok now that is stupid).

Good Luck,

Remember to always calculate the total due!
I just saved $470 because I did!

The dealership reported my cars sale price as $114K to the DMV and they were charging me license fee based on that!
I found out today when I went to the DMV, to contest the amount. So I brought my sales contract I had kept since April and my title and they changed the value in their system and my total cost for everything came down from $1406 to $938.

Bullcrap! Imagine if I had just paid it without doing the math.

The stupid ***** at the counter giving me the number ticket was like "You did your own math?? *laugh*" and had some really bad attitude.
I wanted to show her up when I was done and tell her how much I just saved myself but she was gone!

No one even knew the percentage amount that is used to get the license fee amount (1.15% for 2011). I had to teach them when I went in there.
