took a drive the other weekend up to the Talimena Scenic Drive ..while it can be reached in about 3hrs from Dallas we took the scenic, US Hwy route and were around 4+ hrs traveling time each way from Denton
for the most part the actual scenic drive, AK88/OK1 road is fairly benign but a few miles traveling south from OK1 on US259 yielded a VERY nice stretch of road that wont soon be forgotten (3rd gear, uphill, no traffic... forget 6 flags )
made along weekend of it, rented a cabin north of Broken Bow in Oklahoma ...very nice area (coming from DFW) ...be warned ..no mention of the 1/2 mile dirt road to get to said cabin ...all was good!
all in all ...the trip is definently recommended!

I've heard great things about that stretch of road and have always wanted to do it. Regarding your post, are you saying that it was more scenic than fun to drive?
How many of the Six "flags" would you give the scenery? How many for fun to drive? Thanks.

After driving this route many many times in the past on the way back from Hot Springs, I would give the drive a 4 and the scenery 5.
If you get caught behind slow bikers it can be a pain to pass, since there are a lot of blind turns and short passing zones. You can get some speed in places and its a fun route all in all.
This is only my opinion and I am using local roads, Hill Country, and the Tail Of the Dragon as other examples.
Worth the drive with the right expectations.
