997 Gauge Cluster question~

Will swapping out a gauge cluster tamper with the original mileage of the car on a 997?
Me and my buddy were thinking about maybe swapping colors but didn't want to tamper with the mileage...that would NOT be good~ Thanks for any input

not 100% sure but I thought it has a memory which stores the mileage info.
