I have been searching for a track prepped older 911 and have narrowed my search. They all seem to be pretty solid race cars. I plan to just do HPDEs, not true racing.
My questions are, how reliable are these older models when running 6-10 events a year? What mods should I look for/stay clear of? How can I get a real history on a car I am looking at besides Carfax?
Would love to sell my Cobra to get into one, but selling the 03 TT might be the best bet.
Thoughts?

Scott, just a thought, why sell off a modern dependable car for some old 911? Huge mistake in my estimation but to each his own. Bring your turbo out to the track. It's a blast to drive where there are no cops to harass you.
BTW, nice red turbo.

Scott,
the impact bumper 911s are about as much fun as anything on the track and INSANELY reliable in terms of general mechanical systems (engine trans, brakes, etc.). they just go and go and go. I've never seen an old 911 have a suspension failure for example.
However, you've got to be willing to tinker as it is an older car. It's little stuff, the engine won't come apart, but the throttle cable will get stuck because it's 25 years old, or the heater blowers stop working, the A/C will freeze up, the header bolts will be rusty if you want to change exhaust, etc.
In short, it's a very reliable 25 year old track car, but it's still 25 years old.

Thanks, Gents for all the replies. As much as I really wanted the slant nose, I realized today's suspension is the ****. Since I already have the TT, I decided after long deliberation and a few test drives to go with an 06 Z4 3.0i in triple black.
Test drove the MX-5 Grand Touring and 04 Boxster S, then the Z4. The Z4 drove like a coupe and handled extremely well. The others felt like tin cans in comparison. Nothing against them at all, just the feel I wasn't interested in. The Z4 is in the corral!
Thanks again.
