Please Recommend Best Books/DVD's to Learn Autocross

I attended my first autocross last weekend and was instantly hooked. I searched this section and could find no recommendations for good books or DVD's to teach a newbie some of the how-to's of the sport.

I would appreciate any advice that could be given.

Thanks

Al

Hello Al, I love AutoCross too. I found this book but, I have not read it so, I can't say how good or bad it is but, it could be worth a read:

This could also help:

Thanks Gary,

I bought and read the one about Winning Autocross and it has some good things one can practice on the street or in a vacant parking lot. All that was worth the price. I ordered a dozen orange cones and I now want to find that big parking lot for a company that went out of business but didn't put everything under lock and key.

You're welcome Al. Did the book help you with car set-up?

Nothing in there about set-up except a little about tire pressures.. Not to worry, though, I don't even have a car yet. Searching for a Georgia-based '02-'03 TT.

Al,

I was recommended the following books by some track junkies a while back. I have not had a chance to order them due to time constraints so I cannot vouch for them. Maybe it will be useful to you.

Secrets of Solo Racing: Expert Techniques for Autocrossing and Time Trials

http://www.amazon.com/Secrets-Solo-R...e=UTF8&s=books

Winning: A Race Drivers Handbook

http://www.amazon.com/Winning-Driver...e=UTF8&s=books

The Speed Secrets series by Ross Bentley

http://amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/102...0&Go.y=0&Go=Go

Cheers!

Hello again Phoenix,

Did you rise from something, ergo the user name?

Thanks for the threads. I have already purchased one of them and have read it. All I need now is that private owner, Georgia-based 02-03 tt so I won't get laughed off the track next spring when I show up with my Lexus IS 350 AGAIN. I actually did my first-ever autocross in that car a couple of weeks ago, and I'm sure all the Porsche folks were really thinking who is this dope at our PCA event with his Lexus? No matter, it gave me the bug real bad. That's the best rush I've had since my days in IPSC pistol competition and occasional multi-gun events.

Tnx,

Al

Don't get too hooked on autox because then you'll miss out on doing DEs (driving events) at tracks like VIR (http://www.virclub.com).

Thanks for the encouragement. I do plan to ultimately do some track days, such as a DE. Want to learn how to handle the car before I get on a big fast track with guard rails and tire walls, etc.

That makes perfect sense. Autox is a good environment to get down the basics of car control. You should also try to do some skid pad too.

Come on out to ButtonWillow, which is near Bakersfield, CA. It's wide open with pretty much nothing to hit except the wall near pit lane but, you really have to mess up bad to hit that. They hold Performance Driving Clinics there a few times a year which offer good lectures, lots of track time, great instructors and a decent lunch.

Hi Gary,
Sounds like a good place to practice. One problem, though. I am in the Atlanta GA area and that would be a bit too far to travel and transport.
Tnx, al

Yeah that's pretty far Al. Maybe connect with Skip Barber or another driving school and use their equipment?

Al, secrets of solo driving is my favorite. Dont worry about what car you drive you will still learn tons! I did many an auto cross and DE in my cayenne!!! and had a blast. at the track you will see everything, its not the car its the driver and the experience.
Another invaluable experience that really takes your learning curve up faster is next time make sure you get a ride with an experienced driver!
You will be amazed at how hard the car is really driven!! Car is at redline or standing on the brakes! The ride will be priceless.
Hope you get your TT soon!! Then the fun really begins!!...tom
