I have a couple of problems with this test. I respect the GOL and what they do. They appear to be unbiased. That being said, here are my objections the provided chart:
1). The test results contradict my personal experience. I am a road salesman that drives 30-40K miles a year. I've been driving with an SRX since 2002 and have covered between 100-125K miles with it. That in mind, I've been shot with laser probably between 75-100 times. I'd estimate that at least 20 of those situations were situations in which I'd have been screwed if the system didn't work (30-40 mph over, first car in pack, obvious target, etc...)

You have suggested that it's possible that the police saw my speed but just didn't feel like ticketing me. My personal experience with CT State Police is contrary to this. I've been ticketed for 103 mph (17 years ago, no detector of any type), believe me when I tell you that cop was PISSED... If I wasn't so cooperative, respectful and apologetic, I probably would have caught a beaten and had my car impounded.

2). Several of my road salesman coworkers are also driving with an SRX. Their experiences echo mine. None of us have every been ticketed, and all of us have probably covered a million high speed miles.

3). Test vehicle. The GOL used a silver Chevy HHR with a big chrome grill. This vehicle has a large square shape. The GOL even admit that this car was chosen because it's a 'worst case scenario' for a laser jammer. So though these results may be accurate on an HHR, I don't drive an HHR, so they are irrelevant to me.

A Chevy HHR wasn't our original choice for a test vehicle, but it was the best available at the time. We were initially skeptical: the HHR is different than the Jeep Commander that we have used in the past couple of tests. But it ended up working out very well: the flat front, silver color, and chrome grille made things very difficult for the jammers, and it was better on gas too.

We obviously can't test using every type of vehicle that is out there. We stick to using a "worst case" vehicle, which is a signature method for the Guys of LIDAR. The premise is this: if the jammers are able to perform well on our worst case vehicle, then they should also perform well (or even better) on smaller, darker vehicles which are more difficult laser targets.

4). Installation. I have not been able to examine the manner in which each product was installed into the HHR. Installation can have a drastic effect on performance.

5). Lack of repetitive duplication. They tested one of each product. What if a product was juiced or tainted. How would we know? We wouldn't. Look at the radar test they did. There were five V1's and two 9500cis. I would have like to have seen more than 2 ci's, but the fact that there were several of each product helped provide more accuracy. Did you see that on Run 2 of the Ka band test one of the V1s delivered 128 feet, another delivered 924 feet? Wow... That's a huge difference. Luckily there were 5 detectors in the line up so an average of 419 feet was attainable, which was close to the average of Run 1.

Imagine if during the radar test they tested only one V1, the one that delivered 128 feet. Would it be accurate to say "The V1 doesn't work on Ka band and delivers the weakest performance of any detector we tested?" No, that wouldn't be fair. Because they used only one of each jammer, there is no way know if the products installed performed up to par.

6). This test is conducted by enthusiasts that have different goals and understanding of these products than police do. They are trying to get punch through, and they know where each products weakness is, which product is in the car during testing, how it's installed, where they should aim to get a punch through, etc....

Guys of LIDAR's stealthJamal shot all of the laser guns for the test, he is known in the group as an expert marksman with the laser guns and has a very steady hand. If you don't want a punchthrough on your vehicle, then don't let stealthJamal shoot it. It's a good thing he's in Guys of LIDAR, instead of out there writing tickets!

7). The testing method is unrealistic. The HHR was moving at 35-40 mph. Guns were tripod mounted. Cars were shot at 4 times. The test course was straight, providing clear line of site and a target that was very steady. These things could all happen in the wild, but it's safe to say that this is a worst case scenario at best.

I've been shot at with more laser guns than Luke Skywalker. Never once have I seen a tripod used (though I know they are used in places). Most of the time, the thing is shot from the driver seat of a patrol car through and open window. Never have I been on a long straight away, more likely cresting a hill or coming around a turn that provides cover for the hiding trooper (making me a moving target). Never have I been shot with laser when moving 35 mph. Usually, I'm moving 2-3x that speed when I find myself in a laser trap (giving the officer 33-50% of the time to aim and making him trail me at 2-3 times the rate of movement). All of these things make me a much tougher target than a big giant Silver HHR moving 35 mph in a straight line toward the gun.

8). The Ultimate Goal of the Test appears to be to receive a JTG (Jam to Gun). Though this result is the ultimate goal and demonstrates very strong performance, JTG can be a bad thing. The last thing you want to do is JTG in a real laser trap. If you do, you'd better be prepared to deal with a pissed off trooper. Jamming to gun is equivalent to driving by with your left arm high out of your window with your middle finger extended. Jamming laser guns is legal in many places, but that doesn't mean they won't find a way to ticket you for using one, or pull you over to check that missing front license place, loud exhaust, tinted windows, missing seat belt, cell phone usage, proof of insurance, etc....

See this recent post at RD.net. This took place in Texas, where jammers are legal, when shot at a member equipped with Blinders, a product that GOL claims will not JTG, but it did and look what happened:

Summary:

I respect the GOL. They appear to be a fair bunch of enthusiasts. But, I believe it's important to realize what this test was. It was a worst case scenario created to document relative performance difference among the most popular high performance counter measures. The results don't mean that lower performing counter measures don't work. They indicate that they don't work as well as the higher performing counter measures.

Folks like to throw that table around like it's some definitive black and white proof of performance. It's not. It's a table of recorded results in very specific testing conditions with some questionable testing methods.

I don't have the time to respond to each of your points... but the bottom line is that the Escort jammers suck *** I would choose the Blinder over the Escort in a heartbeat. I know I sound like a broken record, but saying you haven't gotten a laser ticket doesn't mean your unit works. If you don't like the GOL test, go test it yourself. I've seen the Escort in action. Weak! Or you can do a search on you tube. There's plenty of videos on there that support the GOL findings.

As far as JTG not being a good thing... I guess that depends on how much you're prepared to spend on speeding tickets. They're not going to pull you over for not getting a reading. There are lots of cars out there (black, low profile, etc) without countermeasures that they have difficulty getting a lock on. It will take you at least a second to even react to the laser alert, let alone get your foot on the brake and actually slow the car to a reasonable speed. I'll take the JTG all day long and give myself the option to power the unit down when I'm good and ready, if I choose to do so

Just spent the last 45" reading this whole thread. Here's my story, I've had Escorts (7500,8500,8500X50) and the V1x2. The Escorts are a damn good detector, the Valentine 1s are marginally better and the arrows are actually helpful I must admit.
Having said that, after suffering a smash and grab of my V1 in broad daylight I will never have another dash mounted detector again. So I got myself a K40 Calibre installed with laser diffuser up front. Very slick and professional install. So far the thing works great and I'm very happy. If I do road trips I'll probably pick up another V1 for the extented range.

That's another good example of sacrificing performance to have a nice clean bundle. For a serious premium I might add I don't really know much about the K40's radar prowess but I've personally been involved with testing on the laser jamming ability and it was abysmal. If you had your V1 hardwired and mounted on the top of the windshield no one would even notice it was there.

I won't give up my V1 yet but I do like the features on the new Escort radar detector.

I don't really care how much it costs if it stops some A-hole crashing my window again. The cops will tell you the thieves know where to look for the V1s. Like I said, the k40 is perfectly fine for my DD, I'll get another V1 for any road trips. Cost is no object !

I was a cop for 15 years and I'll tell you smash and grabs are few and far between Although it happened to you so you're understandably gun shy. I wouldn't knee jerk and buy a system like that because you were in the .01% of people that had their window broken and they're radar det. stolen. Buy a system because it works and protects you, not because you're afraid of some crack head stealing it. You could buy 4-5 V1's for the cost of the K40. Or.... if you were parking in a not so great area, you could always unplug your Escort or V1 and put it in the glovebox.

It's my fault, I got complacent after 2 years, but you would think the physician lot at the hospital would be safe at 0900 in the morning
After talking to the cops, there have been a rash of smash and grabs in the area lately, a sign of the times I guess...

Yes, you could buy many protables for the cost of a 9500ci or a K-40, but that's not the point, as far as I am concerned. Seeing that picture of that Porsche with a broken window is a nightmare. That would **** me off something incredible. This is was a major factor in my decision.

TT, I am sorry to report that the K-40 Calibre system is unfortunately among the poorest in performance. It is also among the most expensive. Interestingly, it is probably the most popular custom installed system. They do a great job marketing to Car Dealers. They designed Calibre to be easy to install, a benefit that is only realized one time, by the people selling it not by the people using it. There have been a lot of problems with the BlueTooth interface interfering with cell phones and not working when needed. When they redesigned the product, the allocated all resources to the bluetooth interface, and none of their resources to making the product perform better as a countermeasure.

I personally know several former K-40 owners who have gotten laser tickets. I suppose it's better laser protection than just using a V1 (detector only), but be careful with that one. Their jammer appears to work on very few of the available guns.

The three 9500 series products that you mentioned all belong to the same family of GPS enabled radar detectors. That means they all have the TrueLock false alarm filtering.

9500i (~$499)

The 9500i is Escort's first GPS enabled detector.
  • The GPS technology allows it to memorize false alarms (True Lock)
  • The 9500i has a Red LED display
  • Compatible with ZR3 / ZR4 shifting systems

9500ix (~$599)

The 9500ix is an enhancement of the 9500i. It does everything the 9500i does plus:
  • Includes the Trinity Database of traffic camera locations so it can alert you if you are approaching a red light or speed camera
  • Includes 90 day subscription to database updates ($30 for three years after that)
  • AutoLearn that learns/unlearns false alarms for you
  • Speed Variable Sensitivity in Auto Modes
  • Blue LED display
  • PC Flashable for database and firmware updates

9500ci (~$1,599 + Installation)

This is a custom installed unit that has the features of the 9500ix plus:
  • M3 dual aperture antenna. This antenna is 50-80% more sensitive and completely invisible to all Radar Detector Detectors on the planet. This antenna makes the CI the most sensitive radar detector money can buy.
  • ZR-4 Laser Detecting/Shifting system included.
  • 3 Year Database Subscription included.
  • Custom installable layout for clean, neat, out of sight integration.
