Jetta Sportwagen tdi as new DD
#16
The regular suspects,
but the Diesel tuners are by and large exclusive of the gas tuners...
Check out clubtdi.com,
and vwdiesel.net to talk to people,
or check out:
Kermatdi.com
upsolute.com
Chips for Mk3 & 4 TDI's are usually good for 70-80 tq.

my wife has been daily driving a tdi jetta for 5 years now.... this is one of the best vehicles you can buy. the reliability of the 1.9 and the 2.0 diesel is worth buying the car alone. i have seen 300k miles on these cars. the sportwagen will be MY next dd for sure. i would not hesitate to get one. we drove ours 12 hours in one day, on us 40, doing 80, with the AC blowing, fully loaded down with camping gear from the trunk to the rear seats, and we still averaged 42mpg.

Boosted Diesels are fun,
even though you cannot really dump black smoke on folks in the new TDIs.
(which is half the fun of my diesel)
But, you wont have the added negative of getting pulled over about 2-3 times per year for "excessive smoke", as I currently do.
The really curious thing about Diesels,
is the way you can add power and efficiency simultaneously.
For any big power upgrades on a gas engine,
you lose a bit of gas mileage.
Diesels can give you extra torque, and extra mileage when tuned!
I am a VW clean diesel proponent, and think they are simply the best cars (for commuting) sold today.
Far more efficient than a Prius, without all the terrible batteries to dispose of, far more reliable long term,
and the resale value of them is appreciably higher than a gas car.
(look up 2000 Jettas.. Gas = $1500-2000 Diesel = $7-9k +)
Go Diesel,
chip it,
and you'll never look back!
(But you have to tune them to have fun with them. My car was not fun until 20 PSI, but then...)

To the OP, IMHO, the sportwagen is an unbeatable blend of cargo, economy, and value. Here is a detailed buying guide for the wagon which explains the differences year by year: 2009, 2010, 2011 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI buying guide and reviews
It's from my VW TDI forum, feel free to check it out, hope the guide helps. It has tons of info you won't find in any car magazine reviews - they basically just cut/paste press releases.

The TDI Sport Wagon is going to be my next DD. A friend and fellow board member has one with over 200,000 miles and we did a raod trip on cruise at 77mph. We got 52.2 MPG. And as others have stated is is quick!
Make sure to keep us posted on what you end up with?
The new model will not be available until March'ish of 2011. I'm first on the list at my local dealer

New model of Sportwagen? Then your local dealer must be confused because there are people on my board who are driving 2011 models right now. The only one that is delayed is the JettaTDI which will come some time around Jan. for US, already delivering in Canada.

Q7 TDI, for towing. Mostly open rigs, though. I'm not sure, but heard the Q5 might be getting the diesel V6 in the not too distant future. They considered bringing it over in the A4 (like BMW did with their diesel 6 in the 3-series), but that never happened.
I love the diesel talk and almost went for a Merc engined Jeep, to tow with ('07-'08). I needed something a little bigger, in the end.
