2010 GTI or 2008 R32 ???
Hello all...so throw it at me! 2010 GTI or 2008 R32? Looked at, and drove a couple R32's (low mileage, 13-18K) today as well as a new GTI, 1st time since my 1983 GTI back in the day. They are about the same price. GTI with all options books out at 32K +/- and the R32's about the same give or take (at dealer anyway) Looking for a daily drive for work (about 30K yearly) What are your thoughts please.

thx...I drove the DSG and like it very much. the solid feel of the R felt a biy better than the 10 GTI.
now all I have to do is locate a low mileage white R32!

A low milage MKIV R owner here. . . here's the pro's and con's:
MKV R32
+ Nicer looking in stock form
+ More sporty in stock form
+ Buying used will save you some money (I'd expect a low milage MK5 R to be around $22k)
+ Should hold a higher resale over the long term
- Substantially worse gas milage (VR6 ~ 22mpg, 2.0 ~ 30mpg)
- Not nearly as much "mod" potential, if you're into that
Either one can come with DSG so that is a wash. To me, it'd come down to whether I wanted something a little more "exclusive" and "sporty" and was willing to put up with the relatively poor fuel economy. I say drive both and see which feels like the best fit for you!

GTI all the way, have a friend who traded his 2007 S550L for a 2010 GTi and he would do it again and he isn`t missing power, he has a chip and has now around 250hp, I own also a 2010 VW GOLF and it is beautiful for dd....2010 GTI allt he way!

I find my MKV GTI to be more then adequate in all seasons, especially with winter tires.
Once I went with APR stage 1, the car became a perfect for DD. Only issues is getting the power down in 1st and 2nd gear, but some better motor mounts and better tires make a world of difference.
The MKVI dash and changes make for a nice upgrade. The real question is whether you want DSG or 6spd (as others have said.) I bought my GTI because I wanted four doors and a manual transmission, but if your choice is DSG, then it's a tougher call, but the GTI is much cheaper to mod.
My good buddy has a Turbo MKV R32 and the thing rips, but he spent over $15k on the engine alone getting the power. Stage III kits for the TFSI engine are much more budget friendly, but I find stage I to be more then adequate or stage II or II+ if you want to add a downpipe and HPFP (for stage II+).
Either way, it's a good car for the money. Surprised the MKVI's are still closer to sticker. Mine was 31K and I bought it for 25.5k at the end of the year in 2007.
That being said, I had a TSX 6MT for less then a year between my 12V Vr6 and my MKV GTI and while I like my turbo GTI and loathed my 4-banger TSX, there's no replace for displacement.

The new Gti will be peppier and capable of putting out more power. The R is a little heavy and underpowered. With that said I'd still go with the R. It handles itself extremely well at the limit, Awd>Fwd.
