new golf tdi 4 door
i am very interested in getting a fun daily driver that is a diesel. This car gets 42 mpg highway and many say it gets even more. What kind of performance mods can i do with this car and whats the cost for these mods? its a 2.0 tdi engine

No long term experience with the Golf however, can offer feedback on the 2.0 TDI and DSG. Just picked up a new daily, a 2010 Jetta TDI Cup Edition on Sunday.
Lots of torque, already 100 miles and netting high 37 MPG with mixed driving. Tranny is so nice and smooth. Also has sport mode and paddle shifters which are fun to use.
Since I don't have any experience with the TDI or a turbo car, elected to purchase the extended warranty. Factory is 3 yr, 36,000. Went to 6 yr, 85,000.
Loving it so far.

the golf has the 140 hp 2.0 turbo diesel. It does have a ton of torque though. Will this car feel painfully slow or kinda zippy and fun? its gonna be my dd and i wanted a diesel that got over 40mpg. Since it has a turbo i presumed it would be easily modded. Hopefully there is an ecu tune and exhaust out there. I was thinking about making it look kinda like the gti with those cool wheels and the rear spoilerhilario us

Do it! It is truly a great daily. There is no downside. It is fun to drive with torque on demand, if you get the DSG the shifting is seamless. Feel like shifting, the sport mode is entertaining.
As a reference, my fun car is a modified GT3 RS. Different league but still very fun.

Stay away from the DSG in my opinion. A stick shift will be more durable in the long run, and allows more control of the power. My dad has a Jetta TDI with DSG and I find the tranny VERY clunky and weird to drive. I would not recommend it especially considering they have not been proven durable yet.
My next car might very well be a Golf TDI with manual transmission. The motors are very torquey and have decent power. Feels like a lot more power than the HP numbers might suggest.
