Going further on the warranty thing, I don't think parts would be too bad since many of them are shared with the A8. Granted you are going to be paying Audi prices, but most of the major stuff should be interchangable.

I have over 110k miles on my E39 M5. They aren't that bad from a reliability standpoint.
However, they must be properly maintained, otherwise they turn into money pits.
The only big dollar item you really can't avoid is the replacement of the VANOS units, which will happen eventually and is going to cost you around 5-8k no matter what. Otherwise just make sure you stay on the scheduled services and replace the oil every 7500 miles instead of the 12-18k that the computer will tell you is ok.
Otherwise they are pretty bulletproof.
You can find some for 25k that have decent histories, but they will likely be over 90k on the clock.
I wouldn't hesitate to own one, as a pretty active M5 owner, I know a lot about them and it doesn't bother me. But that doesn't mean everyone should run out and buy one either. There is a clean 2001 on the m5board right now with some decent mods and service history for that much. I think only 72k on the clock.
