The future of Ferrari's GTs

The Ferrari Roma is a bold new venture for Italy's most famous car company. Although the Ferrari portfolio counts some of the most extreme cars in the world among its options, the Roma is different. Ferrari realized that some of its customers wanted a car which was less edgy and more relaxing to drive. Not docile. Certainly not. But more of a traditional Grand Touring performance car. Capable of crossing multiple countries in a day, without discomfort to the occupants.

Inspired by Rome

The Roma was inspired by classic Italian architecture and design. More specifically, as can be deduced from its name, the source of inspiration for this new Ferrari's design logic was Rome. Unlike some other Ferraris, which are willing to put aerodynamics ahead of shape, the Roma is different. Ferrari's engineers were not required to produce huge amounts of downforce with this project, which allowed the design and styling team a lot more freedom with the Roma's exterior appearance.

A beautifully balanced design

It is the Roma's side profile which really shows its purpose. The car has classic GT proportions, with the extended hood and a driving position almost perfectly between the two axles. Ferrari has not compromised on the Roma's fundamental front-to-rear weight distribution. Mechanical components are places where they need to be, but also in consideration of keeping the car deftly balanced, to ensure peak driving pleasure.

Stunning - even from the rear

The Roma's rear features slim taillights, to accentuate the car's large exhaust tips. Ferrari has always been proudest of its engines and large exhaust tips are a visual way of illustrating that to anyone who is following a Roma in traffic. The Roma's rear surfacing is elegant and organic, with minimal line disruptions. It is a glorious Ferrari interpretation of the brand's imagining, in regard to what a modern GT performance car should be.

A Ferrari you could spend all day in

The Roma's cabin is different from the near race car ergonomics and finishes that most Ferraris tend to have. This interior is all about luxury, without diminishing the driving experience. There the seats are most extensively padded and shaped for support, instead of keeping occupants fixed in place, through a high-speed corner. Additional storage space, good Smartphone connectivity, and very low road and wind noise intrusion are properties of the Ferrari Roma interior design. The digital instrument cluster is a huge 16-inch high-definition screen.

Numbers to justify the badge

For all its comfort, the Roma must retain stupendous performance to remain true to the Ferrari values. It might be a GT car with great comfort, but that does imply that it is slow. Not at all. The Roma is powered by Ferrari's 3.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8, which boasts 612hp and 561 lb-ft of torque. Those are impressive numbers and they convert to startling acceleration. Ferrari claims the Roma is good for 0-60mph in only 3.4 seconds and should run a 199mph top speed.
