Reviving the Iconic Diablo

Maurizio Reggiani, the former chief technical officer at Lamborghini, has embarked on a new venture with San Marino-based company Eccentrica. Known for its dedication to preserving internal combustion engines in an era dominated by electric vehicles, Eccentrica focuses on modernizing classic Lamborghinis. Their latest project involves producing a limited run of 19 revamped Diablo supercars, priced at €1.35 million each. This initiative highlights Eccentrica’s commitment to blending the legacy of classic cars with contemporary advancements.

Reggiani’s Legacy and Expertise

Reggiani, who retired from Lamborghini in 2023, is celebrated for his contributions to iconic models like the Murcielago, Reventon, and Huracan. Now, his expertise is being channeled into the Eccentrica project. He will advise on updating the classic 1990s Diablo, Lamborghini's first model to exceed 200 mph (320 km/h). This project, though not affiliated with Lamborghini, promises to modernize each Diablo starting from a donor car, ensuring the revamped models maintain the essence of their originals while integrating modern technology.

Enhancements and Modern Features

The revamped Diablos will retain the original 5.7-liter V-12 engines from 1991 to 1994 but will be updated with modern components like electronic butterfly valves, increasing the power output to 550 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. Externally, the cars will feature modernized steering and traction control systems, up-to-date air conditioning, and redesigned headlights. Significant cosmetic enhancements will also be made, with high-quality materials replacing plastic components, ensuring these vehicles retain their retro charm while embracing contemporary design elements.

A Passion Project Comes to Life

Founded by Emanuel Colombini, head of Italy's Colombini furniture company, Eccentrica was born out of a passion for classic cars. The Diablo restomod project, revealed in 2023, is set to start deliveries in mid-2025. Each donor Diablo will be stripped to its steel tubular chassis, reinforced, and fitted with new body panels and an overhauled interior. Reggiani’s involvement in this project is pivotal, given his intimate knowledge of the Diablo, which was still in production when he joined Lamborghini nearly 30 years ago.

A Collector’s Dream

Reggiani has expressed his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the blend of historical legacy and modern experience. "This is an exceptional possibility to work on a reminder of what happened 30 years ago with something that is of today," he stated. With only 19 units being produced, these exclusive Diablos are poised to become highly sought-after collector's items, offering supercar enthusiasts a unique opportunity to own a piece of automotive history reimagined for the modern era.
