Porsche Cayenne is Finally Getting a Sloped Roofline

Lower, longer and wider. The coupe version of the Porsche Cayenne is the brand's most attractive and focused driver's SUV yet.

Less is more

Porsche's large luxury SUV has sprouted a new derivative. The Cayenne Coupe features a sloping roofline that is 1.1-inches lower than its long-roof sibling and a stance 0.7 inches wider. The Cayenne coupe's tailgate is an all-new panel, featuring a more steeply raked windshield, whilst the rear doors have also been reshaped.

No metal on top

A distinguishing feature of the Cayenne coupe is its roof structure. Unlike the conventional Cayenne SUV, the coupe is not built with a metal roof. Instead, customers have the option of either a carbon or glass roof. The carbon roof, seen above, doesn't only create an interesting color contrast. It also helps to lower the coupe's center of gravity.

Lots of glass above

The Cayenne coupe's panoramic glass roof option bathes the cabin in natural light. For owners who live in snowy or predominantly cloudy climates, the abundance of natural light entering the cabin will be a great benefit. To shield passengers from possible negative radiation on bright, sunny days - Porsche's engineers have added a retractable UV shield.

Like a five-door 911?

The Cayenne coupe's overall profile generates an interesting comparison. This is quite possibly the first Porsche SUV which can claim to have some trace of the brand's legendary 911 shape, in respect of its silhouette.

A true driver's car

Balancing the performance on offer with Cayenne Turbo coupe is Porsche's three-chamber air-suspension system. The Cayenne Turbo coupe is not a light vehicle, registering a curb weight of 4850lb, but Porsche's air-suspension is excellently calibrated to ensure it does not dive under hard braking into a corner, or roll excessively when powering through them.

Classic cabin

There might be a treasure of digital features inside the new Cayenne coupe cabin, but the overall design remains biased towards the art of driving - instead of entertainment. Note the boomerang-shaped center-console grab handles, perfectly shaped to help passengers hold on during high-speed cornering. Another detail which underscores Porsche's commitment to classic design is the analog clock, which retains pride of place atop the dash.

Check seats for a checkered flag brand

Cayenne coupe owners will have the option of either a two-seater rear passenger configuration or a three-seater bench. Best of all is the optional houndstooth pattern seat fabric. An ode to classic 911s of yore, the check pattern cloth seat finish was revived last year with the 911 T and has now found its way into the optional specification for Cayenne coupe, too. Porsche traditionalists will love it.

A typically potent Porsche

The Cayenne coupe range is headlined by a Turbo branded derivative, powered by Porsche's 4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. This engine boasts 541hp and drives all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. All Cayenne coupe models have Porsche's configurable Sport Chrono throttle and shift calibration as standard. That means the V8 version is good for 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds. It also powers to a top speed of 178mph, which is academically 1mph faster than the long-roof Cayenne Turbo SUV.

Techy But Traditional

There are some curious features in the Cayenne coupe cabin. Details that illustrate that whilst Porsche is a very on-trend engineering and design company, it will never sacrifice certain aspects of its heritage. And then there is the instrumentation. Although now largely digitized, the rev-counter retains its center position. And it's analog, with a red-needle telling you how far you are into the power band.
